My youngest, whose boyfriend is a Charlton fan, rang Charlton up and asked for two tickets for the Brighton game and without even questioning the post code or anything , sent her two tickets for the home end.

This morning, she received a letter from Charlton thanking her for buying the tickets, enclosing a free membership card giving her discount on match day tickets and priority for away tickets and two pamphlets , one for the online shop and the other for Xmas do's at the Valley ( 80's nights , Beatles tributes and Abba tributes, and offering tickets to the Charlton Christmas party for £25 each.

Now either their marketing department is very on the ball and does this for every ticket sold to non members, or they are desparate for fans.

I assume this is the sort of thing that our marketing department will be looking to do for Non season ticket holders. It looks very professional.

I went several years ago, as a neutral, to watch Aston Villa against Arsenal. For about two years after that I got fairly regular texts from the club with news and details of different promotions they were offering...most of these were voiced by the then club captain, Martin Laursen. I never responded to the texts and eventually they stopped, but I did think it was a very easy and clever marketing ploy...something the Albion might consider as we get nearer to Falmer.

Perhaps the Albion do use such marketing techniques, it's just that we don't see it because we're all either season ticket holders or long time members?

Good point Edna, maybe I was identified for that approach by Villa as it was the first time I had bought tickets to a game and my post code isn't that far away from Brum.

to be honest that was the reason for the post...it will be interesting if we do that, although i suppose there is no point doing it at Withdean as

a) we have been crap for so long that you couldnt give your tickets away

b) now Withdean is filling up and therefore there is no point!

Falmer of course will be different

I've never had anything sent to me. I have attended, perhaps 60-70% of all matches at Withdean, but never been a season ticket holder. Only been a handful of times in the past two seasons and never been sent anything.

I get a Valentines card from Saracens offering various discounts and I have only bought tickets there once.

The club haven't bothered to find out why I have not attended so much in the last couple of years.

actually now you mention it, I get regular stuff from Exiles as I have bought tickets at the Maj quite a few times.

I was even offered half price tickets in the main stand for a Reading game which I suppose is the reciprocal agreement, although there are no Reading shirts on match days

Out of interest, all junior seagulls, of which must run into 5 figures, receive an autographed photo of their favourite player on their birthday, and if it's their 7th birthday, a home shirt.

Plus the goodie bag each year, along with free ticket for them plus an adult.

Also the bags and pencil cases they sent out. The 'Gullys Gang' free membership for children is excellent, probably the best of its type in the country. The club doesn't get everything right but 'Gullys Gang' is terrific.

I still get a birthday card from Spurs, dating back from when I went in the home end at the cup game in 2005

I have sold stuff all my working life. I've bought a bit too. Despite what it may look like, Albion in the community and all that , which is great. The marketing of the Albion is appalling, There I've said it.
The front of house staff understand it, they are great. But the selling of tickets and attracting bums on seats for the ordinary pot-less fan, it's just not happening is it.
The only thing that is selling the Club is Gus and what's happening on the pitch, the ordinary fan does not appear to be valued very much, maybe it's deliberate as they have nothing much to sell until next year.

I tell you what, it works.

My lad's mate (10 years old) 2 years ago was walking around in his Chelsea shirt, spouting everthing premiershite.

I had a word with his mum, told her about gully's gang, adding that he'd be able to go to a 'live' game for nothing. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Guess what, the boy now goes around sporting the new home top, loves going to Withdean ( yeah, I know...), knows all the Albion players ( not personally you understand), and he doesn't give a flying f*** about Chelsea anymore.

Job done.

I've heard a coulple of stories about people phoning up for tickets the day before a game and not being able to buy them because they weren't on the system, they wanted them to fill in a form and take it to the club shop, so they said sod it.

It's been raised on here a few times by others by they tend to get shouted down as whingers. Somethings been wrong with ticketing for years at the Albion but it's not worth talking about now as hopefully they'll get it sorted for Falmer.

The point with Withdean is that because of the buy in advance policy and limited capacity, it's difficult to attract the floating voter type, so perhaps our marketing operation does appear a bit Noddy on the face of it.

I'd like to think that, once the Amex is up and running, that they'll fill their boots.
