Marcos Painter wanted by Millwall

I agree that Painter prob isn't up to championship football and didn't look great last season when he did play (tho i appreciate his injury problems). HOWEVER I'm amazed at some of the derogatary and lack of respect comments from people on here re him. Short memories. He was QUALITY in Lg 1 and a key part of our Championship winning team. He was without boubt the best left back in League 1 that year. It is odd how he seems out of his depth now.

I like Marcos Painter. Good solid defender.

Not blessed with much pace though, and if he were to end up at Millwall, I'd look forward to watching Buckley run at him.

I was thinking the same thing about Navarro the other day having to face his former and far classier team mates

I'm still laughing out loud at Barnsley's valuation of McNulty!!!!! Good player and all that but .................... A million quid for a left back!!!!!!!

Perhaps Gus has his eye on a new CB who can cover LB? Perhaps Gus has been impressed with Ben Sampayo's progress and thinks he is a capable back up to Bridge?

(Alternatively, perhaps Gus is very happy with Marcos Painter)

Didn't suit Poyet's style. He wants players to pass it out, not dribble it out.

Surely though he has the right skill set - a defender who is good with the ball at his feet, and the rest is coaching and tactics?

Well if we hadn't told Vincelot he wasn't wanted I'd of said sell

However although Calde can play there we need more than one player to cover BOTH full back positions
Only judging by Tuesday night.
I think Bruno will fit right in with our team ethos.

So Calde will be needed in his customary position, more often than not.

I will give him a lift if he wants
Such a tired cliche...
How soon people forget. Marcos was brilliant the year we went up. Whether or not he can cut it at this level, and clearly he's found it a bit of a struggle, this casual dismissal shows a lack of respect for the man that baffles me.
If he goes, let's hope it works out well for him.

Possibly the same 'fans' that would expect a lifetime of loyalty from any player that pulls on an Albion shirt.

I respect him and what he has done for the club, but we have moved on whilst he has stood still. League 1 is his level. If that fee is right then its an amazing deal for him and us.

I wouldn't totally disagree, but I recall that when Gus came in he identified that we were losing a lot of goals from balls inbetween the centre backs and the full backs. Calderon and Painter came in that January and made a huge difference to the side. Whilst I think McNulty is more exciting, more attacking player than Marcos, I think Marcos is better at defending, and Poyet's first priority was to stop us conceeding so many goals. Additionally, with being able to sign up Painter on a free transfer, we could sell McNulty to raise some transfer funds and free up some wages, which surely contributed towards us winning the league.

Will add my voice to the pro Painter camp. He is not a poor player by any stretch of the imagination, he simply lacks pace. Put him up against a flier and he is going to struggle. If the left sided CB or the left midfielder helped on the cover he'd not look out of place. It's not complicated.

Agreed it's not often players in our side are left isolated in their duty and it's not like he hasn't come up against pace before. His positioning when defending a quick winger is excellent.

Isn't it just?

I was a pretty useful LB in my day and take quite an interest in watching others play in that position. MP makes up for his lack of pace with his ability to read the game. He may not be the best player in our squad but to be called the worst is totally disrespectful!

I despair at some of our so called fans at times.

Painter was great for us in League 1. Too slow in the Championship for a team that likes their fullbacks to play high up the pitch. Painter can't do that, he doesn't have the pace to get back when we lose possession. If Millwall play a more flat back 4, then he would be a good signing for them.
