The main thing that article says to me (and I've said this all along) is that Jim McNulty is most definitely a championship standard player - ok we're great for full backs now but never quite understood letting him go.

Especially as McNulty now plays centre back and Poyet has been desperate for a left footed centre back ever since he arrived at the club.

He's a decent squad player and we might well need him later in the season.

This,,,,totally off the top of my head. I think Dicker and El Abd are the only men left standing pre Poyet era. That's quite a turn over of players in two and a half years. Crofts don't count as he left, then came back.

Squad is definitely looking pretty thin if you take away the development squad. Up for off loading Painter but are there any decent replacements left?
Really wanted to see JF-C this season!

anyone think Gus might be thinking of playing El-Abd at left back again if needed?

Disagree with the majority of people on this. Painter's solid and has a great understanding of the way we play and makes great defensive decisions. People are obsessed by pace, pace is great, but it's not essential, especially when we have someone like Bridcutt in front of the defence who can support full backs. I would not fancy Calderon as a left back, he's proved to be limited defensivly already and then people want to put him on the wrong side? I hope Painter stays.

Right here, right now
If Painter goes that may make Gus rethink his decision to let Vincelot go. As it stands we have Painter and Calde who can cover left back but if Painter goes that only leaves Calde to cover both full back spots and I can see Bruno missing a few games this season for red/yellow cards. What happens if Calde is covering RB and Bridge is injured? Step up Romain Vincelot!

ElAbd is far better suited to a traditional full-back role, than CH. But Gus is obsessed with playing two wing-backs and does not really worry about their defensive attributes.

No! He's bulked up a fair bit since he played full back so I would think he would now be considered a specialist centre back rather than a wing back that Gus favours.

Excellent bit of business for us, realistically he's a fair bit down the pecking order now and last year seemed to be struggling a little bit with Championship football anyway. Course, that could just be one bad season but...yeah...wouldn't be too upset to see him go!

Didn't suit Poyet's style. He wants players to pass it out, not dribble it out.
