An American has been also stabbed 7 or 8 times having been mistaken for a Man U fan.

I went to the Roma-Liverpool European Cup final in Rome in 1984 (wife is a Liverpool supporter). I can remember a Liverpool supporter going down injured when we left the ground. Not sure whether it was a missile or a punch, but the attack was completely at random. Have to say that I have never been as scared as I was going back to the centre of Rome on a bus full of disgruntled Roma supporters. And I went to the play-off semi-final at the old Den in 1991!

That said, a not insignificant minority of Liverpool supporters thought that it was great fun before the match to have a go at the line of riot police between us and the Roma supporters. Needless to say, they got pretty sore heads, but it was a foretaste of what was to come the following year at Heysel. Up until then I'd always (probably naively) thought of Liverpool supporters as fair-minded, but I was surprised at the amount of bigotry and xenophobia on display even amongst the fans who were not involved in the violence.

I quite like this quote from the BBC report:

Ian Stirling, of the Independent Manchester United Supporters Association, said: "Rome is so accessible, there's lots of different ways of getting here.

"There's people driving over in horse boxes, there's people going to airports all over England and flying to anywhere in Italy to get into a car. Basically, all roads lead to Rome."

Roy Keane clearly had it right about the prawn sandwich brigade!

wozza was pretty pompously asking where you got your information from, and you gave the perfect reply " newswires
, im a journalist ", really no comeback to that is there ?

Well I do try. I must learn to have less journalistic paranoia, I assumed you were laughing at me!

yet again a english football fan has been stabbed in Rome, this is the 3rd time in 3 matches involving english teams in Rome, that a english fan has been stabbed.

And they say we have problems.

I'd say to keep on getting stabbed is a problem?

Except "I'm a journalist too". But I didn't bother.

What do you do again, John?

UEFA has now got blood on its hands. There is NO WAY Rome should EVER host a Champions League final with the track record of regular stabbings in that city.

thats the long and short of it. In fact Italy in general should get its house in order with regards to ith hooligan problems, if stories are to be believed the police have no effective control on matchday in some cities. time they where barred from Europe for a couple of seasons (not that they get anywhere...).
