From the BBC news site, quoting Matt Hancock:

“He said car manufacturers, weapon makers and army suppliers would be asked to change their production lines to make ventilators for use in hospitals treating coronavirus - which can cause severe breathing problems.”

They really are trying to make this analogous to WWII, however I’m pretty sure that most modern manufacturers can’t simply make a few alterations to their production lines to start making ventilators. That might have worked 80 years ago when everything was handmade, but a modern production line can’t do this, surely.

We’ll get nan hooked up to a Ford Focus exhaust system. Gramps can have the Carbine powered SA-80 semi automatic assault rifle.

I normally follow Ben on twitter for his analysis of National Hunt racing which is extensive. His wife, however, has got Miley Cyrus and he posted this thread which is worth a read from a real world perspective.

He - in the nicest possible way - is a stats bore so hyperbole is not his thing.

Very interesting.

I had a very strange weekend last weekend.

I was weak , bones ached, and when I started walking around I was completely out of breath, at some points I was struggling to stand up. I have never had anything like that before. And I felt very tired this week.

As I didn't have a cough or temperature I thought nothing of it from a Corona perspective. Over this weekend I've been thinking twice.

I will WFH the next few days.

Still a large part of me that thinks this is a global government/media feeding frenzy, amplifying this thing out of all proportion. Tho I'm sure our resident twin doom-mongers Bozza & Wozza will soon slap me down and accuse me of trolling, eh The Clamp?. It's patently not just the flu, for sure. It's almost certainly not The Four Horsemen Of The Apocalype either. But maybe the media could show the same level of restraint they're urging the panic-buyers to show, instead of throwing fuel on the fire

I took the 'out of proportion' view only a week ago. Right now we are discussing plans to support elderly folk in our block of flats. This shit has just got real.

It's best to prepare. Right now it seems to affect very few. But the figures coming out of Spain today show us that it's ascent is not far away.

It worked for Brexit, so no great surprise they'd keep the ball rolling.

France now debating whether to adopt the UK model approach rather than outright containment...

Hugh Schofield
BBC News, Paris
Debate is raging in France about what is the better model for tackling Covid-19: the Chinese with their radical system of confinement for limiting the spread; or the UK with their “herd immunity” approach, according to which infection of a majority is inevitable – and even, if properly handled, to be welcomed.

Yet manufacturers such as Rolls Royce know nothing about this, perish the thought he is bullshitting again

That's probably the most stupid comment to come from a member of Government during this virus crisis.

A basic ventilator isn't that hard to put together, and can be relatively low-cost and low-tech. For example http://news.mit.edu/2010/itw-ventilator-0715

It's entirely possible that manufacturers can between them re-tool to make either the components or carry out the assembly.

How can they possibly enforce people staying inside for 4 months? It’s not remotely feasible. Do they arrest the over 70s for taking a walk out? Utterly ludicrous. You can’t force people or police it.

This is Johnson’s ‘Churchill moment’. (Sorry GCCM)

Agree. I’m really starting to question the U.K.’s very theoretical approach now. This, plus the idea manufacturers are going to switch to knocking out ventilators tomorrow morning. All seems pie-in-the-sky...I guess we wait and see.

im told its quite reasonable, most production lines are about the tooling and engineeers setting up machinery for the product required. its typical government hyperbole though, only certain factories would be spec'd for medical grade production, and you'd only need a handfull of factories switching over.

Check out the Washington Post models The Clamp posted. You don’t need 100% compliance, any reduction on contacts will help. So as long as it reduces the overall contacts over70s will have, it will help.
