If you are wondering whether manufacturers could retool to make ventilators quickly, my instinct is that they probably could.

Just imagine some new tech accessory becoming popular all of a sudden, everyone wants one and the money to be made by those who get in there early is good. I'm pretty sure companies who never made them before would be banging them out en masse within weeks. This isn't exactly that kind of situation, but I would like to think that the motivation would be even greater under these circumstances.

As the saying goes, where there's a will there's a way.

I took this screenshot a few minutes ago showing all flights in the air across the Channel, the North Sea, the Atlantic and Europe.
For those of you who've no idea just how many planes there are in the air at any one time, consider today is a Sunday and there are plenty of planes sitting on the ground due the coronavirus.
Some in the air will be empty or carrying very few people but it's quite easy to see how the virus might find it easy to get around the world.

Yer clueless to go along with the government strategy that relies on everyone complying to make it effective.

Let's just all do what we want ....

No, clueless to go along with your apparent strategy of forcing all the over 70s to stay indoors and suggesting anyone who doesn't has a suicide wish. Not what frail folk (and not all over 70s are frail, and not all frail people are over 70) want to hear. Many are frightened. The casual scoffing of the (presumably young and) fit, who will get over the virus in a couple of days is tantamount to trolling. I't thoughtless and dimwitted at best.

There is plenty of scope for humour about this, including black humour, but your post wasn't funny (or even meant to be).

Think on reflection I'd rather go with the opinion of the open letter of 200 expert scientists rather than that of the 3 onstage stooges advocating 60% of the population are allowed to develop the illness to acquire 'herd immunity' and save... WHAT exactly?! Seems to be advocating consigning huge numbers of our elderly to an early grave for no real reason at all. Total ****ish inhumane strategy IMHO

France now debating whether to adopt the UK model approach rather than outright containment...

Hugh Schofield
BBC News, Paris
Debate is raging in France about what is the better model for tackling Covid-19: the Chinese with their radical system of confinement for limiting the spread; or the UK with their “herd immunity” approach, according to which infection of a majority is inevitable – and even, if properly handled, to be welcomed.

What percentage of the population need to be immune to the virus for herd immunity to be effective?

My strategy

No sir; it's the government's strategy.

....but as you know better......

As for trolling. Hardly. The stats as we know it suggest you have a 1 in 5 chance of living if you get it over 70. Sorry if this sounds insensitive.

presumpably you believe that other strategies will have no impact on the population?

You are not replying coherently to what I said about what you said.

For the last time, the statistics you quote do not treat age as an independent variable. As we get older our chances of dying increase. That doesn't mean we as individuals become more vulnerable to the effects of every illness. It means we have a higher risk of co-morbidity. If we don't have the comorbidity and are generally fit, our risk as an individual is low.

And for the last time the government is not telling everyone aged over 70 to stay in isolation for the forseeable future as you infer.

You are misinterpreting data and, as I said, you seem quite blase about doing so, and that's not right. I suggest you belt up.

Putting aside the 1 in 5 argument ....

Exactly what are the government (Matt hancock) asking the over 70's to do then? As I must be misinterpreting the news?

I know the self isolation is not in force yet but it will be 'soon'

Complete shut down here now. Apart from food stores and chemists No foreigners allowed in, only perm resident holders, and nobody allowed out of the country from midnight tomorrow . spence good timing mate. Took a personal turn for me today. The laces on my 'comfy' shoes snapped. I was fairly irrational about it for 10 minutes
