Whilst I was in the car this morning,I heard an interview on LBC between James O'Brien and London Mayor Sadiq Kahn, neither of whom are usually complimentary about Boris Johnson. However Sadiq, when specifically asked about the actions of the Government in handling the outbreak, stated that he believed they were handling the situation absolutely correctly and according to the advice from the Chief Medical and Scientific Officers. He also stated that he was in daily contact with the CMO.Even smug old James had to admit he was reassured by all this, including the reasoning behind why this country hasn't necessarily taken the same steps at the same pace as other countries.
Worth a listen for some on here, and personally, it was good to have a pretty candid view from someone removed from Government.
The irony was, that whilst, Labour Mayor, Sadiq Kahn was supportive of the Government, Rory Stewart, wannabe mayor and ex Tory minister reckoned they'd got it wrong!
Funny old thing, but perhaps good to see that blind tribalism doesn't always rule.

I have come to the conclusion ( maybe rubbish ) that the 'story' about not taking measures too early because people will break them later is a cover story.

The Government want a significant number of cases to create an immunity in part of the population. I can see it would be monstrous for a politician to admit this.

Not sure why you would come to that conclusion. Seems more likely that it's just a case of people getting this virus being inevitable. Once containment is no longer possible, you have to accept that containment is no longer possible. Then it becomes a case of managing the numbers of infections over time.

Nobody "wants" a lot of people infected, it may just be that a lot of people will get infected, like it or not. So you have to face that reality and do the best things you can with that in mind. Trying to chase down the virus for the sake of appearances would be ineffective and a waste and misdirection of resources. It might seem cold, and it might make you vulnerable to these kinds of accusations (that you "want" people infected), but dealing with the reality is the right way to go, it's the only way to go.

I actually think the governments approach here has been very brave. Do the right thing and risk negative perceptions, don't do the wrong thing and risk more negative outcomes for the sake of perceptions. It's a brave PM who would do the right thing in these circumstances, regardless of the politics/optics.

Real Madrid players self-isolating for 15 days.

Tennis scrapped for 10 weeks too, apparently.

Aussie GP must be in doubt.

Sport is OVER for now imo.
Of course I understand we all have our own opinions on what's sensible and what's an over-reaction, but I really would encourage people to reconsider going to the Arsenal game, at least if traveling on public transport. It's just not worth it IMO.

He did not suggest 'taking it on the chin'. He reasoned along the lines of 'some say lock down, some say take it on the chin but our line is to find the balance'. I have no problem with that, it is reasonable whether you are a Tory or Labor voter. I wish that this statement would stop being misquoted.

This, sadly people will use times of trouble and concern to score political points and get over their biased opinions...

My quote may be misquoted but you have overlooked the biggest point of my post which was 'herd immunity'.

Robert Peston is either lying or he has a direct quote.
https://www.itv.com/news/2020-03-12...ronavirus-herd-immunity-writes-robert-peston/

Herd immunity comes from vaccinations not allowing the public to get the virus and see who survives.

This is stupidity and why Johnson is advocating 'taking it on the chin'. Herd immunity is attained by vaccines, but there is no vaccine available yet.
No, herd immunity is also attained by a proportion of people having had the virus, and therefore no longer able to get it or spread it.

I am considering whether I should go now, if it is on, certainly will make my own way there if I do.

There are people who have had the virus twice, like the Japanese woman on 20th February.

https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/japanese-woman-is-first-to-catch-covid-19-twice-mcr9cnv82

That is the only reported case and is widely believed to be either an inaccurate test or she suffered a relapse (which happens with many viruses apparently).

From all the reading I've done (a lot) there is no reason to believe that anyone other than the immunocompromised can catch this twice, and even in those people to do so would be very rare.

That is not a fact. It's not clear that anyone has had the virus, and then completely eradicated the virus, and then got it again.

With the pace of events now, it's just inconceivable the PL will make it through to mid May? Football players are mere humans with partners/families who mix in public places like supermarkets to.

I know the PL is super rich and the broadcasting money is a big big deal, but there's just no way 20 clubs with squads of 25 (500 players) are going to get through 8 weeks without a decent % also getting it, thus quarantining the rest.

Unless all players are locked in quarantine facilities at their training grounds and not allowed home or outside for 8 weeks, the season cannot finish. PL should needs to wake up and look beyond broadcasting rights.
