Extremely depressing stuff, feel incredibly sorry for the hard working doctors and nurses who are again being put under intense pressure which will get much, much worse over the coming months.

Even the people behind that article are quoted as saying “there is no doubt that we will get to a position when this dangerous and erratic disease is largely under control for the population as a whole and we can 'learn to live with' Covid-19”

The increase in case numbers is ‘planned’ - ie a calculated and necessary risk is being taken. If we stay locked down and have a wave even of this size (which is currently very small compared to the previous ones in terms of hospitalisations and deaths) after the summer when the normal range of winter illnesses are upon us things will be immeasurably worse.

One of the major issues contributing to NHS stresses at the moment is not the number of admissions, but the number of staff having to isolate as a result of track and trace pings. Happily, it looks as though the need to do this will be relaxed for those who have been double-jabbed, and the sensitivity of the system is going to be reduced to avoid so much unnecessary isolation.

There is a weird irony that the accusation has been made that the Test and Trace system didn't work very well and wasn't reaching enough people.

Now it is working well and doing what it is supposed to it needs to be tweeked to stop it being quite so good at the job it was designed to do...

Where's Alanis Morissette when you need her?

Yes I understand the reason for the tweeks...

It’s a pile of turd, it doesn’t work

I work with someone that hasn’t left the house for 5 days as isolating, they then got pinged again - they haven’t been in contact with anyone

NHS staff are being told to switch it off

Complete waste of money.

What, the government have wasted our hard earned money?

That's disgraceful...!

Oh and is the bit in bold true or anecdotal? Twitter is full of such posts but other than social media I can't see any evidence that it is a mandate.

Some definitely being told to deactivate it, particularly when at work……it’s not a ‘mandate’ from the top as such but sounds as though it’s increasingly happening. Thing is, isolation after being pinged by the app is only ‘advisory’ anyway and not a legal requirement - it’s only if you are contacted directly by the T+T people that you are legally bound to isolate. Bit of a mess, really.

A mess you say, who would have thought it with HMG?

It's funny when you read stories like this, that are basically just click bait, and in many ways designed to cause confusion and fear that when you look behind the figures there is a different story!

While the cases of RSV have shot up recently, they are still at lower that average levels then pre-Covid - clearly the mitigation that has been put in place has prevented some children from becoming ill, where they would have previously, however to dress this up as something else is a bit naughty of The Guardian really.

Who would have thought it, taking precautions prevents illnesses! :)

Interesting piece…….I’ve always (pre covid) been a bit against excessive hand sanitisation (watching people in the office after we moved to hotdesking spending their first 20 mins wiping every visible surface before they start work for example) and the like - you have to be exposed to germs to build any resistance to them.

I wonder how NZ and other such places are going to open up again……..

I thought it was an interesting article covering a different angle….still as you say it’s the Guardian and clickbait bit like some of their reporting on Covid over the last year

Thank you! Wagon over the axe valley sounds perfect, mate. I was born and bred Dorset and it has a place in my heart
I hope to get down to my place in Cornwall in August for a rural getaway and then maybe Paris in Autumn.
Right now, I’d genuinely be happy with anywhere, just a nice change of scene.
All the best

Notice that cases in the Netherlands are up 350% in the past 7 days. Mark Rutte went too fast and too early, now restrictions are being re-imposed

Our government needs to take note of others mistakes. If we don't it will be more pain in Autumn...
