Johnson holding another televised address at 5pm. Hoping it isn't a last minute ditching of Monday plans.
Clearly Indian variant is less than ideal but no clear evidence it requires deviation from current plan, especially when so many millions have been jabbed.

I think they will put the brakes on, but better safe than sorry. We dont want this Indian variant getting out of control here, forcing us in to a full lockdown again.

There is no evidence, so far as I know, that the vaccine doesn't work against the Indian variant. And if the vaccine does work, then there is no need to lockdown.
They could perhaps ramp up the vaccination programme again. Have they the quantity of vaccine to do a million jabs per day? If so, then do it. Two million if they can.

Most of the sequencing is 2-3 weeks out of date so I'd expect the true picture of cases is already substantially higher and will explain most of the places where cases are starting to stagnate and in other ears rapidly increasing.
Must confess I always thought the schedule for releasing from lockdown was fair enough up to the point everything was back to normal on June 21st. Not to say things won't be returned to normal enough to be of little or no concern but, as has already been hinted, I think face coverings will be worn on public transport for the foreseeable future.
Also I really don't understand the readiness of some to have a foreign holiday.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), a VOI has been associated with changes to receptor binding, reduced neutralization by antibodies generated against previous infection or vaccination, reduced efficacy of treatments, potential diagnostic impact or predicted increase in transmissibility or disease severity.
It’s in 44 countries.

I would have thought the odds are that all variants are likely to have at least one of those attributes. It's a wide-ranging list.

Whitty et al taking a sensible approach of accelerating double vaccinating to the most at risk, also monitoring to see whether there’s any danger that the Indian Variant is leading to a marked increase in hospitalisations and deaths.

Not only that, but the graph showing the genomic sequencing data so far with the largest amount being the week immediately after India was placed on the Red list when there would've been a bigger rush to get back.
Yes I know it can take up to a week from when the lab gets to sample for the results to be made public so the week beginning the 3rd May is not complete.

Now, I’ve had a couple of beers tonight, so do take this with a pinch of salt, but I thought that article was terrible. Essentially a nine paragraph analogy which required several round of brackets just to keep the reader loosely on track of what was going on. So now, rather than feeling reassured I’m merely anxious I’m going to be eaten by a cheetah at some point in the coming weeks. Or maybe even a zebra, I don’t know. All I do know is my head hurts.

It's Warwick University saying 10,000 a day. Other scientists have said 20,000 a day.
January's peak (which was higher than in the first wave) was 3,800 in a day....
It's as though the models assume vaccination isn't happening?

The new models are deeply troubling, suggesting that if the government carries on with the new unlocking on Monday and even if it then delays the 21st June deadline if the new variant is 40% more transmissible (and current estimates are it could be as much as 60% more transmissible) we will see a bigger wave than January.
