When we had young children, we just completely stopped watching the news on TV, because it's usually not very nice for young kids to see. It's not that difficult to avoid it.

27,692.3 people have been struck by lightning. Of which between 2,769 and 8,307 will have died.
51.9 have died (in the US alone!) from falling out of bed in the last 6 weeks.
6.2 people killed by DOGS in the US in that time. Dogs are about as dangerous as coronavirus.

Not having a go. Appreciate that's it not nice to think of elderly relatives who could be at risk (of all sorts of things, of course).

What experts are you seeing say this will be gone in a few weeks?
Prof Neil Ferguson says that the real number of total cases is likely to be x1000 and that community spread is likely already happening in UK. He also says that 400k deaths in UK would not be an absurd number. That probably explains why the government has been in touch with local authorities to make sure they are prepared for mass deaths

I get that people including yourself are worried but I'm not sure it's doing you any good. I think it could become.a major problem but I'm not going to start seeking out news stories to.scare myself

Look, all it is is flu - a slightly more unpleasant version than what we usually have visiting us in the winter months. Some old and infirm people will die. Some old and infirm people die of flu every winter. Maybe it will be a few more this winter. It will certainly help solve our problem with care for the elderly if a few more of them don't make it through to the spring. People love to have something to panic about.

Ironic that for the last few weeks I've been washing my hands much more than usual, using hand sanitiser gel regularly and have still managed to catch a stinking cold.

Closure of ports would be 5 weeks too late. The only way we can now manage this is to enforce strict curfews, closure of all businesses (except food and pharmaceutical) one member per family to leave house every few days for supplies. Every visitor to the country must self isolate for 24 days or risk fines. No time for PC powder puff in a crisis like this. We need to act otherwise we are all going to lose loved ones. People before profit.

How does this work? These businesses need deliveries so the logistics companies would need to be operating still. They'd need fuel so the fuel suppliers would need to work still. What if one of the delivery trucks broke one? Recovery companies would need to be working still as would mechanics. Then they'd need parts so the auto supplies places would need to be open, etc etc etc If only modern life were so simplistic!

I’ll be highly miffed if the Brighton Marathon ends up getting cancelled. That said, we’ll probably have bigger concerns if it comes to that.

As someone who works in the water industry, the quite frankly ludicrous idea that we could all hide in our houses amazes me. Obviously people go on about emergency workers being allowed ‘out..’ etc. But, as others have said, supply chains need maintaining and fuel too, and food and then ... water. Isolate all the key workers who work 24 hours a day to provide clean drinking water, well, then we’re utterly screwed. Our society relies not just on emergency personnel but key providers of comms, energy, fuel and water... we can’t ever hope to isolate more than a small % of people for any length of time. It’s likely many of us will get this virus in the coming weeks, no hyperbole here, just reality. For most it’ll be a nasty version of flu, for some it will be deadly yet the same could be said for all of us driving cars to work everyday.

Just get on as best you can, and if it is the rapture well... better to die soon than late.
