So what happens if you put 60 items on the conveyor belt and the Muslim or Jewish member of staff notice that some pork scratchings and a bottle of wine is on the belt? Are you expected to put it all back in the trolley and go elsewhere.

A Muslim can touch pork and alcohol if it is packaged. They just cannot consume it (alcohol for medicinal reasons is ok for Muslims).

I would leave the lot on the conveyor belt and walk out...now who will pick up the pork and wine to put it back.

she wouldn't have to that's a certainty, another colleague would have to clear it up for her, whilst M & S still maintain their polocy the muslim is perfectly within her rights to refuse.

As i read it a person went into a supermarket that stocks pork and alcohol amongst other items, to purchase pork and alcohol, amongst other items.
The cashier refused to sell the pork and alcohol to the person because of her take on her religious beliefs, which does not seem to apply in many other establishments where people of the same religious beliefs, who also stock pork and alcohol amongst other items, will serve the pork and alcohol amongst the other items.
