Don't understand why anyone would deliberately set out to provoke a confrontation. The result would only likely be that you would be prevented from buying anything from M&S.

Your argument could just as easily be applied to going to the "6 or less items" with 10 items then arguing that you see no reason why you should queue longer just because of the goods you bought, after all the cashier is not forbidden from selling more than 6 items - puerile argument!

Stupid argument. 6 items or less is clearly displayed so you can make a choice, are you saying there should be a sign saying 'Muslim serving' - i thought not. M&S are the ones causing the argument, not the customer. I suppose we should all be sheep and be dictated to - and not question why.

Fair point.

So these cashiers 'can' refuse to serve pork and alcohol. Has anyone actually refused to serve someone or is it all just nonsense policy from M&S head office?

It's being reported M & S are allowing Muslim checkout staff to refuse to serve customers with booze and pork. If its true the poor old customer will have to bugger off to another till!
Muslims are quite happy to work for a company profiting from selling these products and I thought it was not ok to consume ? not to process the transaction!. It's hardly a case that they are promoting it. Are the lorry drivers gonna refuse to deliver to the stores? And store staff will not have to replenish the shelfs?. I think M & S haven't thought this through

M & S get some backbone! anyone not wanting to do the basic requirements can go and work somewhere else

In Downham Seagull's world, everyone would be like Downham Seagull. Downham Seagull's world would be considerably inferior to one in which M&S displays some respect for difference.

Hows about you go to Pakistan or any other Muslim country and try and sell those items in a shop.I would lay a wager that respect the difference would be the first thing on the locals mind!

Nonsense - the whole tenet of your earlier post was that you would deliberately seek out a till where the cashier was likely to refuse to sell alcohol in order to provoke an argument.

Exactly the same as going to a till for 6 items or less with 10 items just to have an argument - childish!

It doesn't. Jewish people were prohibited from working on the Sabbath which started at sunset on Friday evening to sunset on Saturday evening. Some churches then carried that into Christianity to apply to Sundays. Most churches now have morning & evening services so you can work and still go to a service.

The world I live in does not let religion dictate my life. If you believe M&S have done the right thing and should allow this sort of thing to happen to any belief then that is your choice but living in a country which is so diverse to other cultures it works both ways and its important tolerance works both ways. I would never ask someone to do anything which is forbidden but I really don't think this is the case in this situation. And judging by the public reaction most feel the same.

The liquor is bought illicitly from bootleggers - or from the regular alcohol shops that are supposed to sell only to minorities holding permits but also sell illegally to large numbers of Muslims.

Pakistan even has its own breweries which officially produce only for non-Muslims - or for export.

What a stupid and irresponsible decision by M&S. It will only cause more hatred, more racism, more xenophobia and will also lose them a lot of wealthy right-wing customers.

if people were actually to bother to read the article from the telegraph, M&S actually admit some fault here, in that they would normally work with people's beliefs and therefore put people who might have this sort of issue (whether Muslim or anything else) on clothing or something else where the issue wouldn't arise.

But, let's face it, there are plenty of people around who would deliberately put a Muslim on the bacon Counter just to cause trouble.

As mentioned above, M&S in the telegraph article do admit they are at fault in putting someone in this position.
