Did anyone else read the muslim times link and some of the comments on it?

It's comments like that, from people like that, that are causing the divide. They really aren't doing themselves any favours and if some troublesome types like the EDL or BNP see it then there is just a bit more propaganda for them to use.

Same here. Till not selling pork is no different to "cash only" ie just queue at the next one.

and therein lies the irony of the whole situation: customers will discriminate against some staff along racial lines, avoiding their queue, because they think they might refuse to serve them.

Actually Islam forbids credit. Can they therefore refuse to accept a credit card when you pay?

If not, what is the difference?

Exactly - one rule for one set of people ...

Don't understand why any religion attracts civil rights - that's all religions.

The M&S case however is not a matter of rights but a commercial decision. If they insisted that all staff serve all customers all goods then this would likely cost them either in terms of loss of sales or loss of staff.

A number of shops employ under 18s who cannot sell alcohol.

Why not. I, as a customer can choose any free till I want. Why should I have to queue longer because of what I choose to purchase. I would not start the argument - they would if they refused to serve me, and it would be very interesting to hear their reasons ( seeing that muslims are not forbidden to sell the items in question ) .

Don't understand why anyone would deliberately set out to provoke a confrontation. The result would only likely be that you would be prevented from buying anything from M&S.

Your argument could just as easily be applied to going to the "6 or less items" with 10 items then arguing that you see no reason why you should queue longer just because of the goods you bought, after all the cashier is not forbidden from selling more than 6 items - puerile argument!

4 1/2 pages.

Stuff like this really just adds fuel to the Islamophobia fire.

M&S and the newspapers are both terribly irresponsible - especially as they will clearly have to revoke this. Is it just a ridiculous publicity stunt?

Imagine how many times it will kick off when a right-wing punter is told "sorry, I can't serve this to you because I'm a Muslim - please join the back of that queue" half way through his shopping being scanned.

A right wing punter? Just a normal member of society.
