Where is that?

The Embassy, Hove. On the corner of Western Road and Little Western Street.

During the 1970’s it was demolished and a hideous building built to replace it.
Worked there for short spells on and off while my wife was imprisoned for a longer stretch.
Thankfully the building is being replaced.

That's at the end of my road. It was originally going to be demolished but I don't think it is any more. Currently a shell but have heard that they are going to keep the basic structure and work around it.

Me in #37.

I remember going there on a family cinema trip. Did you have the pleasure of visiting The Embassy?

Mid-Late 70s, they did a few (maybe more) 'all nighters' with movies and live bands. It's a little hazy, but think Easy Rider, Woodstock and Enter the Dragon may have featured (along with the Jam and Tonge), but may have been dreaming ???

Apparently Princes, but long before my time

The Princes News Theatre was a massive part of my childhood where my mum used to take me to watch cartoons, long before they were on television. Sylvester, Tweetie Pie and the like. Pathe News was part of the show, but not really interested at the time as I was only 4 or 5! I haven't been to Burger King for a few years, but last time, it was still the same shape inside. Seating area in the stalls, screen in the same place and the circle balcony still there. Occasionally followed by a treat at Lyons tea rooms further down North Street on the right if I remember correctly. Then catch the 5, 5b or 15 from outside Hector Powe and home to Patcham. Sometimes on the open top bus for a real treat or occasionally the white bus which was extra exciting.

Played host to the best of the best.....The Jam 43 years ago today.

Bloody Hell. Have posted on this several times previously. I was at that gig, and still have the ticket stub

Yes, yes there were.

The Embassy
The Classic
The Astoria
The Regent
The Odeon
ABC Hove
The Rothbury Portslade
The Continentale Kemp Town
The Vogue
Duke of Yorks
The Brighton Film theatre (or similar!)

Just off the top of my head from 60s and 70s.

That was back in the day when the only 'Action' you would see out where the Marina now is, was a bit of winkling, if you were lucky

The Savoy in East Street became The ABC Brighton
The Academy in West Street was one of my favourites till it was demolished.

How come they played there, was this a regular venue for bands?

Not as far as I recall. It was quite a decent venue for the time, too.

A little bit before my time for seeing bands, I know one person that went, and that is someone I only met a couple of years ago,and I've seen you mention the gig before on here.
I've liked The Jam for years and I didn't know they played there until a couple of years ago.

I saw them at the top rank and they flounced off because the crowd were spitting in the mosh...my we laughed.
I was at that one too, did they flounce off or just stop the gig, then restart after a while?

The Pavilion Cinema in North Street Portslade closed I think in the late 1950s. It was situated a short distance from the junction with Church Road on the north side. The site now seems to have a warehouse built upon it.
Its closing was no loss as it was the epitome of the classic flea pit as I found when I watched a film there. The toilets were a disgrace with no toilet paper provided. I remember being told that in one of the ladies stalls there was a streak down the wall where a hand used by someone caught short had attempted to get rid of the residue from an asian style self cleaning.

As I remember they were greeted with an absolute torrent of phlegm as soon as they started their set and flounced off. They did come back on and play though.

I saw Easy Rider in there, was quite plush if I remember..

Who knows what the one where Waitrose extended into was called, or the one that was in Burger King West Street?

The Curtain Club could count,
? ....or the Inn Place building, where the big fire was.

That’s where I saw Easy Rider too, easy to get in if you were underage.
