This art deco building on Kingsway, Hove designed in 1928 for the motor trade and used by Caffyns was demolished around 2006....

This thread is almost turning depressive... sad to see you got the same tendency as here: demolish beautiful buildings, replace it with boxes of steel and glass.

I Sweden this neighborhood won the "best architecture of the year" award:


Its as if all architects are from a different planet... a bad one at that. Or the whole industry is funded by "property developers" who wants to spend as little as possible.

I hope they dont demolish your Hippodrome. Is the legal protection for listed buildings good in the UK?

At the top of Holland Road Hove where it meets Cromwell/Davigdor on each corner was a church (now a block of flats), a school (now a block of flats), an Electric Company (now a set of offices with a cash and carry behind) and a pub. The only original thing left on the crossroads now is the Palmeira pub which seems to have survived through the decades.

Brings back so many memories. At Patcham County Secondary School (as it was then before Fawcett came along) in the 1950's our first swimming lessons were in the gym, laying over a chair and perfecting the breast stroke! After 2 lessons of that we were taken on a number 5 bus, marched up to North Street baths and told to swim 10 yards to get our first certificate, in our knitted woollen trunks of course! Survive that and you were taken again to get the 25 yard certificate.

The Embassy on Western Road (close to the Hove/Brighton border). It became a laser gaming place in the 90’s.

We saw The Towering Inferno there!

I saw Easy Rider in there, was quite plush if I remember..

Just off the top of my head from 60s and 70s.

That was back in the day when the only 'Action' you would see out where the Marina now is, was a bit of winkling, if you were lucky
