Just watched the London display and I have to say, after also seeing the Sydney display, London shouldn't bother.

Sydneys effort was had a proper party atmosphere with great visuals and music. Hats off to our Aussie cousins.

The London effort looked and sounded mess, was all over the place and to be honest felt like a London Mayor promotional campaign.

It should be credited to the good people of London and the country.

Waste of the millions spent

The ‘London mayor presents’ bit at the start was a piss poor political move. The fireworks were around before him and will be around long after he is voted out
I have not seen any footage. What did the Mayor say which was political?

I've just watched the Sydney ones.

There were lots of big fireworks, spread across a far larger area than the London display, but the music and theming was rubbish.

That dreary "It's new years eve again" song played on a loop for a full 5 minutes, then nothing but bang bang bang for another 10?

Those who do not support the politics of kindness and inclusion may have complaints about the London display but, that aside, it was a much more engrossing show.

I was in Sydney in 1990, and they were doing the fireworks displays then, at a time when we were doing the drunks V riot police spectaculars in Trafalgar Square.
It was great because you could spread out across multiple places along the harbour and it was all synced up to a radio station playlist.
Definitely the most impressive fireworks display I've been to.

If the event were deemed a success, the public thought it great, thought the millions were well spent, nobody complained and everyone thought 'nobody does it better', it wouldn't be England would it?

I’ve seen the NYE fireworks in Sydney a couple of times and once in Melbourne- honestly I preferred the ones in Melbourne! Never been to the London ones, other than from my armchair….

London is good, but having experienced some of the bigger Lewes displays where proximity is part of the fun and huge effort goes into the ebb and flow of the display it's hard to judge anything without a bit of bias that it's just not as visual or visceral as something from Cliffe or Southover or even Waterloo.

The most overhyped I've ever seen was 4th July in New York a few years ago. Much was made of the number of fireworks going off which was an impressive number, but spread across such a vast area it ended up like watching a load of independent displays from people's back gardens on bonfire night in the UK rather than anything synchronised or an actual display. Hugely underwhelming!

Mostly true, but the 2012 Olympic opening ceremony seems an honourable exception and like the work of a totally different country if watched back now!

Schoolboy error THPP. You're not supposed to enjoy it. You're supposed to compare it to other displays, and conclude that ours was crap.
These days, if you say you enjoyed the London NYE firework display they’ll arrest you, and throw you in jail.

If 2024 is going to be yet another year of the 'woke', I hope everyone had 'firework displays' on their bingo card :lolol:

I was also there that year - staggering up and down the Opera House steps after an Eskie or two. Stunning, and a great night out.

What was the sussex one like?

Too hammered to watch the London ones, watched a bit of naked attraction instead, what a disturbing show that is! Very funny though
