The problem is you can't keep removing the person that membership has chosen to lead the party. They should have stuck with Boris, but having got rid of him this was always going to be a car crash unless the membership selected the candidate they wanted (Rishi). Was never going to happen though. So are they going to keep going until they get the answer they want?

No decent candidate will in their right mind take the job on now, that's half the problem. Far better to wait until Truss loses the election, they can come in and have five years as opposition leader and then have a good go next time. Opposition leader is a far easier role than PM.

If Truss loses the next election, she will be in the political wilderness alongside the neo-liberal clique who have taken over and re-invented your party.

So will there be left ?

Their usual response in opposition is the lurch to the right, so I'd imagine Rees Mogg might give it a go in opposition if he still has a seat.

The reality is that the electorate are currently less scared of Labour than the Tories. They'll need to find a safe pair of hands, the only one reasonable normal is Gregg (whatever he's calling himself this week) Schnapps

Sue Ellen is using distraction politics based on divide and conquer and culture wars. She is trying to change the media narrative today away from the Tory economic shit-show.

Yes, the old Tory favourite of being as spiteful as possible to desperate people ...they normally lap that up.

Mind you, I think it's only going to slightly delay the inevitable collapse of this government. The infighting is starting to build now and will soon explode in to almost open warfare between factions of government, back bench MP'S and the right wing press.

They are starting to fall out and coalesce around different " Tory " principles and its a fight not unlike the scene in The Life of Brian....." This was his gourd ".." Yes indeed - repeatedly referencing the interviewer. It's presumably out of a textbook of 'how to look mates with the interviewer' - but just comes across as creepy.

Agreed and mildly sinister. Personally I think it's a technique to belittle the interviewer, an interviewer who will always refer to Lizz Truss as "Prime Minister".

It isn't working. The electorate will never warm to her, in fact the opposite is happening. Her "media personality" is simply unlikeable. By all accounts quite engaging in private too.

Well that was like watching the stupid girl get told off by the Headteacher for single handily bringing down the school's grade average.

...In my interview with her, she was determined to talk about the help the government is offering with energy bills, almost irrespective of what questions I asked.

It is a colossal intervention from ministers, which the government is proud of, but it's been drowned out by first the national period of mourning after the Queen's death and then the so-called mini-budget, much of which blew up in the government's face.

Now, weeks later, ministers from Liz Truss down are leaning into talking about it, and doing so all the time.

They've concluded, firstly, that it's what plenty of people are very worried about and secondly it is calmer territory upon which to focus, rather than those budgetary measures that have caused them such a headache.

well she's right there, and it is an impressive package. all the more stupid to have shoehorned in the not-a-budget announcments to take the headlines.

What we were facing was the fact the even Bunglec***s various waffling, lies, distractions, backhanders, culture wars and general buffoonery couldn't cover up the complete and utter ineptitude and incompetence of this Government for ever ?

Similarly, they achieved 45% of the Scots who bothered to vote in Dec 2019, based partly on the premise of a Conservative UK government. That would be booted into touch, instead the many failings of her administration will be highlighted by Labour Scotland in the buildup to the Dec 2024 GE.

On being questioned about Dorries’ comments about a general election today, every Tory I’ve heard has said that the last thing the Country wants is a hung parliament. Whatever the polls say, the Tories will wheel out the prospect of SNP influence (and all the chaos and instability they think it would cause) as a reason not to vote Labour.

However, the recent Labour Party Conference backed PR, and I think it is likely Starmer will bring it in to Labour's next GE manifesto. This will make it much easier for Labour, the Lib Dems and Greens to openly talk about electoral pacts and consensus politics. Indeed, there was a time when Scottish independence would give Labour virtually NIL chance of an overall majority under FPTP but with the Tories likely to be toxic for the next decade Labour won't necessarily need Scottish seats to be the largest party in Westminster.

I think the issue of Europe is key here because Scotland overwhelmingly voted to Remain, the SNP are committed to rejoining the EU and all the while the UK economy is tanking and floundering under the post-Brexit red tape and import/export duties that will give Sturgeon a fighting chance, whoever is in charge in Westminster. However, if Starmer was brave enough to negotiate a customs union with the EU and help kick-start the economy that by itself could defeat the SNP's hopes of independence.

The whole post-Brexit situation has been obscured by Covid and Ukraine, and when the dust settles it will become clear the endemic shortage of labour and additional costs on UK businesses are preventing our economy from growing at anything like the rate we'll need to pay for SEISS, furlough, Covid and the energy subsidy.
