Fireworks are dangerous. It could have happened anywhere to be fair.

Yes, yes they are, but freely available to buy and let off by any Tom Dick or Harry.

Yes, it could, and frequently does.

Many of those needing treatment will have been of the "passed out drunk" variety, or trips and falls in the crowd. Out of 40,000 people, it's hardly out of the ordinary.

Oh, that's ok then

so your whole opinion is based on guesswork about how busy the town is on the night and the assumption that they could fit thousands more people into the narrow raods on the procession routes - shows just how ill informed you are.

The map below shows the main area that the spectators will line the streets, it's a relatively small area with limited capacity which is already stretched, so do you honestlyy think it would be a good idea to advertise it nationally and encourage more visitors on the night?

Would you rather have everyone able to attend and people getting badly hurt in the crush because at least then it wouldn't be seen as a local event or should all of the local population be thrown out of town so that people from miles away can come to watch

look you f***ing idiot.i have tried to be polite on this thread but you are being defensive of your inbred locals only position.stuff your f***ing poxy locals only "celebration"40,000 only,it is dying of it's own accord

I dont care how many turn up.Lewes 5th nov is shit and always has been,it is just the recent influx of middle class twats in Lewes who believe it is worth saving

Superintendent Tony Blaker said: "It is thought around 40,000 people attended this years event and I am delighted to report that there were only 23 arrests...

If there were 23 arrests at a football match attended by 40,000 there would be back page headlines about how hooliganism was back - there were 11 arrests at QPR v Millwall game a few weeks back that prompted such headlines. And yet, at an event with four times the number of arrests, the police say they're pleased the figure is so low. There are some double standards there.

If you weren't so blinkered in your view and opened your mind to rational thought once in a while you would be able to see why every effort is made to limit the size of the crowd at this event.

The societies don't want large crowds. The smaller the crowds, the more fireworks they can let off in the street and the more enjoyable the event is for those taking part - If only 1 man and his (deaf) dog was watching the event would still continue because it is not done just to simply pull in a crowd and entertain visitors.

There are still people that travel from across the globe to spectate, so i don't quite see why you think its locals only - it just sounds like you are jealous

It is an event that has lasted hundreds of years and will continue to be around for a very long time to come, no matter how many sad individuals like you moan and complain about it and the people taking part

It is an improvement on the general behaviour of the locals,A town so bad that it has to have it's own 800 capacity prison. Brighton manages with 20 Cells in the Edward street Nick.
Yet again I blame the OOOOZE muck that flows freely from the brewery.

How many arrests are there on a typical friday night in somewhere where there are 40k revellers? somewhere like the clubbing areas in Brighton?

Ask Lord B,a newcomer to sussex who states its a local event for local people only.
keep it for people who drink the Harveys shit.

AGAIN FOR THE HARD OF READING.
Keep it local, keep it for inbreds and newcomers,
Other towns embrace the cash spent by visitors, keep it for the petty minded.
Lewes Bonfire rejects us,I will spend my cash where it is welcome.

In London village.
Although I am no stranger to Lewes I have never been,or inclined, to visit, a Lewes Bonfire "celebration".
Lewes people are "special" and have never embraced the opportunity to share the "experience" and as such I am happy to let them engage in anti Papery without my company.

Inbreds do as inbreds will,I blame the muck from the brewery.

Bridgewater Somerset does the whole thing so much better.

I went to the parades didn't bother with all the fireworks etc. It was ok, so many toff twats! I have never seen so many. The last time I went was about 10-15 years ago it was much more light hearted then. It seems to be a mix of drunken toffs, bigots and tourists that go now. I won't be going again.

23 is not four times 11. That aside, the attendance at QPR v. Millwall was 15,325, which means that there were 0.72 arrests per thousand people. The arrests per thousand at Lewes was 0.57. And surely the manner of the arrest has some bearing on the way it's reported? There's a bit of a difference between someone being thrown in the drunk tank for a evening at bonfire, and someone being arrested for battering a fan of an opposing football team or police officer.

:lolol: so everyone in Lewes prison is a local then :lolol::lolol:

Is that why so many of those visiting are coming by bus from Brighton?

Btw - I don't think they use the cells at Edward street, don't they have a purpose built custody centre elsewhere in Brighton - also if anyone is arrested in Lewes or the surrounding area, they tend to be taken to Eastbourne custody

Shows just how little you know about a place you seem very keen to insult

What he said.

Lewes is a strange town full of Muesli munching, dripping wet liberal sandal wearers, geriatric hippies or young upwardly mobile 'immigrants' from places like Camden & Islington with children called Sebastian & Phoebe.

As for their town council & MP?!

Bonfire night in Lewes was always class-seems a bit tame nowadays. No news of drainpipes being broken off walls to use as home-made bazookas,or chains of rookies terrorising local teachers etc!Maybe somebody from the yokel counties should be brought in to teach Sussex folk how to die from boredom-display of illuminated combine harvesters/snow ploughs yawn:moo::laugh::dunce::bigwave::wanker:

You missing the point. It's not the number of arrests, it's the "only" comment from the police. If they arrested 20 people in West St on Saturday, they wouldn't say we only arrested 20. And the Argus wouldn't be praising the behaviour of people - they'd be running sanctimonious editorials about how shocking the licensing laws were.

And, as I said, if it happened at a football match, all hell would be let loose and football "hooligans" would be blamed on everything from the price of petrol to Trayc getting kicked off X Factor.

I don't like Muesli
I'm not a dripping wet liberal.
I don't wear sandals.
I'm not a geriatric hippy.
I'm not a young upwardly mobile immigrant.
I'm not from Camden or Islington (I was born in Brighton)
My kids are not called Sebastian or Phoebe.

So, to conclude. None of the above.

You are a twat.
