Lewes is a small medievil town with narrow streets that just isn't big enough to cope with a large number of visitors
It has an Area of 11.4 km2 (4.4 sq mi) and a Population of 16,222 (Parish-2007)

It has crowds of upto 80k on bonfire night that have to line a route only approximately 1.3 miles long

How exactly do you expect the town to cope if it was advertised and promoted to everyone? you would end up with far more people arriving that it is safe to have in such a confined space

You missing the point. It's not the number of arrests, it's the "only" comment from the police. If they arrested 20 people in West St on Saturday, they wouldn't say we only arrested 20. And the Argus wouldn't be praising the behaviour of people - they'd be running sanctimonious editorials about how shocking the licensing laws were.

And, as I said, if it happened at a football match, all hell would be let loose and football "hooligans" would be blamed on everything from the price of petrol to Trayc getting kicked off X Factor.
