His finest hour in an England shirt was undoubtedly against Greece at OT in 2001.
Even if he hadn't popped in the winner (or the leveller as it turned out), he carried the entire team on his shoulders that afternoon. His sheer force of will got us qualified, and his goal was the icing on the cake. That was a GREAT performance from him, and I don't think he ever topped it.

He covered a RIDICULOUS amount of ground on that day. I think he's still tired from it.

Isn't that why he spends half the season on loan at Milan and attends most friendly matches while the likes of Gerrard seem to be "injured" just beforehand.

He was still playing regularly for England even before he got his loan move to AC Milan.

He definately changed, in my eyes, after that day.
I was happy to bad mouth him, as I do most soccerball players, but he absolutely put himself a class apart that day. Even now I really won't accept a bad word against the fella.

Seeing England players loafing around the pitch, then coming up with a pi$$ poor excuse for a bad game, makes me appreciate how much he 'needs' to play for his country.

He he, I wasn't expecting your post to go that way as ....

Yes, he did definitely change after that day. he never played anywhere near that level for England again. Even by the time that tournament came round he was badly on the wane. ironically, he seemed to lose the energy in his performances, and before long was a luxury player and needed other around him to do the running.

No doubt, that performance at OT was superb, as good an indiviual performance for England as I've ever seen. We were never to see the likes of it again from him unfortunately.

I really don't get the hostility people have towrds Beckham. Hes an outstandingly committed player on the pitch, regardless of what he does in he private life is irrelevant, I personally believe he is actually a very good role model for young boys playing football (when was the last time you heard a story about Beckham punching someones lights out in a bar, e.g Gerrard).

He's come a long way since the rash young lad we knew in '98, I think he is a very respectable, well-rounded footballer.

That 1-0 against Argentina was one of the luckiest wins we've ever had, they absolutely BATTERED us (and yes I was delighted, in fact I was pissed as a fart by 11am).

Beckham and the whole team stank in 2006. We were an utter embarrassment, and the fact that he pinged a ball over against Paraguay and some Caribbean mob for us to pop one in does nothing to obsolve him from his performances in that abortion of a tournament (from an England point of view).

Beckham has been a great servant to England over the years, but the fact is that he just has not turned up at a tournament yet, which will always count against him when you're judging the greatest players in the World.

Spot on. He was f***ing woeful in 2006 (as were they all) but because he took every free kick on either side he *SHOCK HORROR* set up a few goals. If I took EVERY single free kick for a team I would expect to get a few assists. And giving him credit for setting up Gerrard's goal against T & T because he passed the ball THREE YARDS to Gerrard is frankly ridiculous.

Yeah deffo, but that's my point.
I think of DB, and my next thought is of that game, and everything else seems to fade of into the distant. My rose tinted glasses come out and i'm instantly back 8 years.

Yes - let's all laugh at one of the best midfielders that this country has ever produced along with the most consistent and passionate players to ever wear an England shirt...

:wozza:

Great call. Best player we've had since Gazza, if not better. If half of these pampered fuckwits had a smidge of his skill and passion we'd have half a chance of winning in South Africa.

I suppose Beckham shouldn't be going to the World Cup for some of you, probably the same losers who think that Poyet should be binned after 2 weeks. Get a bloody life.

I am sure he has been injured for a few of the past tournaments and been thrown in whilst not being fit. I seem to remember some Oxygen tents and some rubbish red top asking us to touch a picture of his foot and pray.
