The MLS is just a load of old gubbins though innit. Didn't LAG lose to a team called Real Something-or-other, which reminds me of Sunday football with teams like Bevendean Barcelona.

Real Salt Lake – probably not even allowed a drink to celebrate with a name like that. A lot of Brits get very sniffy about MLS. Yeah – MLS is crap but it is trying to improve, more teams being added over the next few years. England is fortunate in having arguably the best footie league in the world but it has had about 100 years longer to get there. MLS is up against the big 3 in the States and because it doesn’t have breaks every 3 or 4 minutes it’s not very TV friendly.

If Paul Scholes wasn't ugly and ginger and had movie star looks, he would be rated just as highly if not higher.

Sorry, didn't mean to come across as sniffy and disrespectful about the league over there. The problem I have is with Beckham spending most of his year playing at that level, and still believing that is sufficient preparation to play for England. How can any sort of form in the MLS justify a place ahead of someone performing in the Premiership each week.

Agree with that, although have watched a few games on the telly, I don't think it is that bad, reckon the MLS would give the Championship a decent match up.

As for Beckham, nah, won't laugh at him, he is a hardworking and talented footballer and person, and becoming more of a philanthropist. He brings a huge amount of happiness to many, helping less fortunate people, mainly kids, across the world.

He's had a remarkable career, and has appears to have a charming personality, even in the face of the vile abuse he got after the Argentina game. His playing record speaks for itself, there aren't many more successful footballers playing today.

He might even top that with a successful visit to South Africa next summer, something I would love to see.

In the past when you visited far off lands you were met with shouts of "Bobby Charlton" and "George Best" from grinning locals, nowadays, you hear "David Beckham".

Just don't get why people can be bothered if they dislike him so much, to even start a thread like this. Oh well, that's NSC for you.

Isn't that why he spends half the season on loan at Milan and attends most friendly matches while the likes of Gerrard seem to be "injured" just beforehand.

By playing for Milan for the next 4 months, surely that is him agreeing that he needs to play at a higher level, so that is what he is doing, that will surely give him much needed sharpening up. Arguably, the Italian league is better preaparation than playing in the diving and cheating tournament that is the EPL. More of a "European" style of playing experience, which will give him something none of the rest of the England squad will have.

Anyway, he'll only get picked if the manager thinks he's worth it, he needs to prove it.

Mellotron must have one hell of a reply coming...

Nah, can't be bothered with yet another Beckham binfest.

Don't get me wrong. David Beckham - a very good footballer. No more, no less.

I only take issue with those who are so taken in by the marketing etc and our over reliance on him at points that he has become idolised to the point where he is seen as one of the greatest footballers of the last decade or so.

and possibily, if he had actually had Beckham's desire to play for his country, rather than getting a bit bored, and binning it.

Not 'taken in' by anything.

Beckham IS 'one of' the greatest footballers of the last decade. Past his best now, clearly, but why all the retrospective spite?

Sadly you are right Phil.

Not something that Mellotron is normally guilty of, though. I agree with most of what he says, usually.

Eh? Many ways?

As far as I can see, he's only *ever* done one knobbish thing, and that is get himself sent off in 1998.

Apart from that, he's been an absolute role model for a generation of English kids.

Beckham is already an icon of the 90s and will be a legend in the future.

If Beckham is a loser what does that make the band of internet geeks, anoraks and social pygmies aka NSC ?.

Winners IMHO.

Would YOU like to wake up next to Victoria every morning? But then Becks doesn't apparently...errr.....

I wake up next to my bedroom wall most mornings but it doesn't rabbit on.:US:

No spite meant, I just don't agree that he was a GREAT player, technically. Great players put in a number of "great" performances on the biggest stages.

I certainly don't agree with "let's all laugh at David Beckham".

You may be surprised to know I used to DEFEND Beckham against Chesney...

I think more accurately it was that he "didn't feel he was spending enough time with his young children?"

Hardly a Carragher situation.
