Huge credit to Veltman who won the physical and mental battle, as he so often does. He was chatting away in his ear the whole game, bit of a masterclass in psychological warfare from our man.

Definitely played a part in keeping Trossard so quiet.
I wonder what the deal is with these two now? They were the best of friends whilst at the Albion. I recall they went on holiday together with their respective partners and also recall seeing a photo of them both out with their parents.

Any account of the recent poisonous and harmful rifts within an underachieving Belgian national side have that grasping little heart attack-eyed tosspot at the heart of them. A “decent guy” or some such he most definitely is not, according to his closest colleagues.

I’d love to know too, but I tend to watch Veltman closely most games because I love his little games, and he was particularly chatty with Trossard yesterday, and it was obviously pissing Trossard off.

Wouldn’t be surprised if they’re still mates but “what happens on the pitch stays on the pitch”. Veltman is all about giving 100% in the moment

Off the field I suspect they’re still good mates, but you can wind up a good mate at work too. If anything you know exactly the right buttons to press.

Did get the impression that Veltman isn’t too keen on Trossard these days. That’s from going to the away match earlier this season too. Either that or they’re the very best of buddies whose relationship can take a lot of rough and tumble.

Tbf to Trossard he was pushed out. Can't have a manager who refuse to talk to you face to face but trashtalk you every press conference.

Good player, by all accounts decent guy... luckily Joel Veltman doesn't give a shit and controlled him through the game.
He wasn't pushed out.

He had made his decision to leave months before all that stuff happened with De Zerbi.

Personally I think he'd decided at the start of the season that he'd outgrown the club and would use the World Cup to put himself in the shop window. He came back threw his toys out the pram and blamed De Zerbi. But I know 100% that he had made that decision to leave well before that public bust up.

I also think De Zerbi's attitude with him was probably based on him giving up trying, because he was engineering his move. Which has been supported by reports of senior players calling him out on it.

Trossard said he would leave before the World Cup even started, months before training field bust up.

“Our coach has now left for Chelsea, but speculations about me following him are pointless," Trossard said in September. "If the opportunity arises, I want to go. But I do want to play and not sit on the couch."
Trossard wants to leave

I think this one was probably quite 50:50, Trossard wanted to leave in the summer but stayed for the lead up to the WC, but then had a bad world cup and must have been pissed to see all the adoration being thrown at Ali Mac, knowing Mac was off in the summer whilst his own job situation was unclear, he demanded a move, threw a wobbly and got what he wanted. RDZ meanwhile, who hadn't been there long, took the opportunity to establish his control over the squad, kicked Trossard out of training and made an example of him in press conferences. Everyone was notably tougher with Trossard than they were with Caicedo later that same window.

Trossard was my favourite player of the time but am not to bothered about him now after that. He pushed the envelope more than others did. Still, I don't like players being booed, it tarnishes those previous memories.

Much as I hate Chelsea, I was impressed by them applauding Gilmour and singing "One Billy Gilmour" when WBG went to take a corner at the away end last season. A bit of a contrast with the pantomime booing of Caicedo and Cucurella for 90 minutes. Sometimes it just comes across as a bit small-minded and obsessive.

Caicedo and (moreso) Cuckoo made a fuss to get their move. Is that what WBG did? No, Chelsea didn't want him. It's completely different.

They really aren't, there was a huge fallout between the 2 of them before Trossard left

Correct, I was saying he didn’t get riled up but that booing a player can do that…

But that's as true at the start of a game as it is mid-way through. When a player is booed at the start, that can rile them up. If after 25 minutes they've not done anything good, the booing might get to them more, as being riled up hasn't helped them.

That isn’t how it went down with Trossard. Lallana and other senior players laid into him for not putting any effort in. He then disappeared to Belgium. After we beat Liverpool RDZ said after the game there was a way back for him it’s up to the player.

Lallana actually tried the arm around the shoulder 'keep your standards up, don't rock the boat, play your football and a move will follow probably in the summer' line. Based on his own experience at Southampton.

Which apparently was received badly by the easy going and not at all stroppy belgian, hence a wider number of senior players being more vocal

I for one was stunned to see Trossard completely disappear in a game at the Amex. Never seen that before…
