All the time we are this solid at the back it doesn't matter at all. We still have the second best goal difference (and better than Peterborough's) even though several sides have scored more goals than us.

I would think Murray is capable of getting 20 goals, Barnes 15, Lua Lua/Bennet/Sparrow 6-8 each.

Interesting top scorers from a team that try to emulate our style of football

2010/11 Theo Walcott Arsenal 4
2009/10 Cesc Fábregas 15
2008/09 Robin van Persie 11
2007/8 Emmanuel Adebayor 24
2006/7 Thierry Henry 10

1 significant goalscorer in 5 years - could it be down to our style of play ?

We're a quarter of the way through the season, and if players continue scoring at their present rate, by the end of the season, it could look like this...

Murray 16
Lua Lua 16
Barnes 12
Sparrow 12

Yeah, over-simplistic, I know, but stats ought to improve if players find the back of the net more than missing it.

Mackail-Smith - Peterborough - 8
Logan - Exeter - 6
Madine - Carlisle - 6
Mclean - Peterborough - 6
Pugh - Bournemouth - 6
Westcarr - Notts County - 6
Davies - Notts County 5
Harley - Exeter - 5
Hoskins - Bristol Rovers - 5
Hughes - Bristol Rovers - 5
Lambert - Southampton - 5
McQuoid - Bournemouth - 5
Rhodes - Huddersfield - 5
Vindelot - Dag & Red - 5
Wright-Phillips - Plymouth - 5

Lets imagine we had a striking pair of Mackail-Smith and Mclean.

I would fancy us to pick up an extra 2 points from bournemouth, an extra 2 from carlisle, and an extra 1 point from Sheff Wed. (I am leaving out Tranmere and Rochdale as a current striker scored in those games.)

But i think by having those two upfront, we would have an extra 5 points so far this season, which would put us 8 points clear. That is why it is important to have a 25+ goals a season striker, which currently, we do not have.

Our current strikers are not good enough for a team in our position, simple, Luckily for us, our defence/midfield are more than good enough.

Saying that, in a couple of years, i fully expect Barnes to be a 25+ goals a season striker at this level.

Another point i would like to make, many of the players on that list play for teams that are not doing so great this year, if they were in our team, with the service we can provide, i would expect them to have scored more.

.

What's you gripe then, if this is the case? Bearing mind our goal difference is +5 better off than Peterborough.

But there is a cost associated with having two big name strikers, because they command big fees and big wages.

If we had paid for those two I think we'd have to make do without maybe 5 or 6 squad regulars. Could we have afforded people like Greer, Kish, Barnes, Sparrow and Calderon if McLean and MacKail-Smith?

Yes this is true. I was not saying we could sign these two, just using them to demonstrate how much better off we would be if we had two very good strikers.

Yes, and he has countered that, by asking what the NET effect on the rest of the squad would be, if we'd concentrated resources on 'two very good strikers'.

Carry on.

Also - don't ignore the defensive work that our forwards, and attacking midfielders put in.
Barnes, Murray and especially Bennett all have a hand in that miserly goals conceded column.

Maybe the likes of McLean and Mikail-Smith do not contribute as much.

As stated previously, you don't need a talismanic striker if your whole team is banging in the equivalent, but that talismanic striker will pick up the slack when things go through a rough patch and you can't rely on a whole team to do that in quite the same way.

No thanks. Great lad and good player at your level, but will not be able to cut the mustard at championship level where we will be next season, so you can keep him. No need to thank me!
