I am liking Hughes in all of this though. He isn't rising to any of it.

That's the rub, Hughes is a softly spoken and humble man. The antithesis of Fergie.

I liked the old United too - Best, Law, Charlton. They had romance and it was hard to dislike them, in the 80s with Big Ron too. Ferguson soon put paid to that, I'd wager they're hated more than Don Revie's 1970s Leeds team, and they were universally loathed

Didn't say Fergie had never none the same but this idea Hughes has been some kind of angel is a joke.

I think you misinterpreted the sentiment. WCS simply meant that they liked how Hughes hadn't reacted to Ferguson's baiting tactics, not that he hadn't tapped players up or had acted like an angel.

Fair enough, I simply meant that there all as bad as each other. Yes some are louder and more vocal but generally all managers are trying to get one over another. Whether you like Fergie or not he's won alot of trophies, some would argue that his 'mind games' helps his team on the pitch. Whether it's talking about the ref or the opposition his team has an advantage cos he's done it. How do you think Adebayor and his team mates feel this morning when they see that he was looking to sign for United? All managers use mind games and some are just better at it than others. Look how Liverpool's season hit the fan when Rafa lost the plot almost Keegan like.

Not saying it's right what he said but he's done it for a reason and most of the time he gets it right

Pretty much would I said, except I think when Ferguson retires people will be able to see that more clearly, at the moment their (and to be honest, my) dislike of man utd blinds them (and me) to it (most of the time).

I actually agree with Ferguson, I think the City billboard thing lacked class.
Having said that I think Fergie's privately sweating on the gambles that are Owen and
Berbatov

Personally I think this Fergie Mind Games thing is a figment of the meejah's imagination. Seems to me that he is completely consistent - ask him a direct question and you'll get a direct answer. Any so-called mind games that destroy the likes of Kevin 'I would absolutely LOVE it' Keegan say more about the state of Keegan's mind than they do about Fergie. Fergie has seen it all, done it all, and if anyone has earnt the right to be dismissive of the competition then its him. IMHO like.

If City lose a couple of games early on Hughes will be gone, replaced by a big name europeon manager with no premiership experience (see ramos at Spurs etc) and it'll be a boring mid table finish followed by swift departures of all big name signings
If Hughes goes Morinho will be the man to replace him.

Agree. Any kind of shaky start to the season by City will see it happen sooner rather than later. Hard to see Hughes being there at the end of the season unless City look like seriously challenging for the title. Which I don't think they will. And Mourinho looks to fit the bill perfectly as a replacement for Hughes.

I think their owners are quite good and unless they are bottom half he will be given to January. They have said top 6 so if they get 6th they wont sack him.

I've not bothered to read what Ferguson has said as surely all he is doing is saying something for effect, as usual? He is just building up the "Siege Mentality/Everyone hates us" that he has always used as one of his main motivational tools. And looking at most of these posts, it works!

Like him or not he gets the results for his employers which is what he is paid to do.

Ferguson just loves the sound of his own voice. A classic wind up merchant , if he hadn't got into management he is the sort of ex footballer who would have ended up running a pub.

Don't particulalry like either club, but this made me chuckle quite a bit. A huge billboard has gone up to welcome Tevez to City....

It is a funny poster - but City knew exactly what they would stir up by doing it. It's an official club bit of advertising, not some photoshop thing on the internet.

When you get official announcers taking the piss like that, they get fired. Perhaps wrongly, but they do.

Man Utd have an official Banner at their ground which reads 34 years. Aka the number of years city have not won a major trophy for. So this is just city getting one back.

Indeed there are several people I would never have given knighthoods to. Sir Ian would most certainly keep his due the the facts that A, his falls from grace were pretty minor and B, The huge amount of money he has raised for leukeimia research off his own back, as it were.

I heard an interview once with him in which he was asked how and why he started doing his famous walks. He said that a friend had a little boy who had been diagnosed with Leukemia and would he mind popping along to the hospital to try to cheer him up. When he got there he spoke to the kid and lots of the others as word spread that he was in the hospital. He did the usual signing autographs and posed for photo's with lots of kids.

He got talking to some of the doctors on the ward about the prognosis and treatment of the children and was totally shocked to be told that nine out of ten of the kids in the ward would die of the disease. He than asked what, if anything he could do to help and was told that money for research was short and therefore vital. Thats when he devised the sponsored walks and raised millions of pounds and awareness.

He said that his greatest achievements had not occurred on the cricket pitch but in raising enough money and awareness that now, nine out of ten kids survive Leukemia.

So, would you take his knighthood away ?

Great post. Not many go from success in one sphere to greater success in another.:D

The man can win whatever he likes: he, unlike his illustrious precedessors, will never have even the slightest semblance of anything resembling any class.

As much as I loathe what the plc and then the Glazers have done at OT, Ferguson has kept loyal to his ideals of how football should be played. United may represent greed, exploitation and marketing, but they have under SAF kept it on the deck and played a passing game.

Buy success rather than grow it at home (One youth cup winning team apart).....encourage your players to disrespect the referee...Treat the FA Cup as an optional extra to dip in and out of.....flounce out of BBC interviews because they were rude about your dodgy agent son once.....bully 4th officials....

Nice one SAF.
