229/3 Maher out for 95

All of the top three gone...

Lancs 1 point so far, and 33 overs to take 3 or 6 more wickets to gain the other two points available.

Lancashire struggle in vital game
County Championship D1, Old Trafford (day one, tea): Durham 177-1 v Lancashire
Match scorecard

Tom Smith captured the wicket of Garry Park soon after tea

Title chasers Lancashire were finding it tough going on the opening day of their pivotal Championship encounter with Durham at Old Trafford.

Durham had advanced to 177-1 at tea, with Australian Jimmy Maher unbeaten on 72 and wicket-keeper Garry Park 44no.

The Red Rose county, who trail Sussex by 19 points at the start of their game in hand, were pleased to see sunshine and a prompt start in Manchester.

But it took them until after lunch to make the breakthrough.

Left-arm spinner Gary Keedy dismissed Gary Scott lbw for 44, but he had survived two chances, when he was put down by Iain Sutcliffe at short leg.

And he had earlier offered a half-chance when he glanced Dominic Cork but wicket-keeper Luke Sutton could not take a difficult leg-side opportunity.

Maher took 50 minutes to get off the mark and raised his bat to the pavilion after receiving an ironic round of applause for his first scoring stroke, which came after facing 39 deliveries

I think the fact the rule is called Leg Before Wicket explains it pretty much.

Not necessarily. Your leg doesn't have to be before the wicket to be given out. If you aren't playing a shot and it hits you outside of off stump but was going to hit the wicket you can be given out LBW. Just trying to make a point that cricket is not as simple a game as you make out. Not like football, it requires brains as well as sporting prowess.

Hadn't realised that the 130 over cut off applied to the fielding side as well as the batting side - excellent news. So potentially they could be 2 points down already if they only get 5 wickets or less by 130 overs. Excellent stuff. Keep on going Durham !!

What happens if sussex and lancs have the same number of points after all the games have been played?
Do sussex win title by winning more games?

255 for 4 at Stumps of 109 overs. Good day for Sussex.

Durham need to see out the next 21 overs only losing one more wicket then push on to 450 ish. Even Durham can't lose from there!!

Whats the betting they lose a day to rain and all the usual whining comes from Old Trafford about the weather. TRY BEATING THEM IN TWO DAYS LIKE WE DID THEN!
