Surely the issue is that the person in charge of English cricket (Strauss) is saying prepare slow pitches, and the coach of the team is saying another.

I don't care how we win as long as we win. Why would you prepare something that favours the opposition?

The fact whatever was requested worked at Glamorgan, seems to be overshadowed by the debacle at Lords.

But apparently it didn't in the first test, that's the point. The issue at Lords (for me) was poor performances not the playing surface.

We won the first test because Australia picked the wrong team (Haddin and Watson) and dropped Root, our only decent batsman, on 0.

... and we won the toss. (it was also only the 3rd first class match of the tour, that's no time to get used to English conditions)

The England cricket team are at work. They don't have to like each other. Will he score more runs that someone else? Yes. Therefore pick him and the others who dont like him can understand that you dont have to like people that you work with. Their job is to win the ashes, losing with "jolly nice chaps" is just losing.

Better batsman than any we have at present bar Root. Strauss, the man who called KP a **** live on TV, has been shown up to be the dullard he truly is with his email asking for slow pitches as his means of countering the Aussies.

Some of you are just not getting it are you.
Where were his congratulatory comments after the first test.
He is a self obsessed dick, why some choose to not see this is beyond me.
I too would rather lose than have him back and he's 34 so give the youth a break.

Obviously never played a team game before.

If you had to pick an XI from the two teams, how many England players would be in it?

Root definitely, then we are struggling IMO. Jimmy might squeeze in.

As for not choosing players because they focus on themselves rather than the team, it's just as well NSC wasn't around during the Geoffrey Boycott years.

Yes and we dropped Rogers at Lords all very hypothetical (other than Watson), but even then 1 or 2 players don't make a team.

The toss is key.

Don't necessarily agree, you want to look over and know your teammate has your back and your trust.

Given KPs repeated behaviour and comments there is no way any player can truly do that. Plays for himself not the team.

What comments about the team. I don't recall him criticising individual players in the book apart from Prior.

Shouldn't criticise any team member.
Should take a long hard look at himself and what he could have done differently.
But he can't and won't though as he is above and beyond criticism.

Having read it, he is critical of himself in his book though.
