the bit i caught was about getting involved with businesses in every sector to kindle the invention of the early industrial revolution. he missed out the lack of government control was a prime reasons we done so much back then.
I mean, I’m genuinely struggling to think of what policy to emerge this week (and it’s not a full agenda because it doesn’t need to be) could be described as “far left”. The only thing I’ve come up with is the removal of charitable status from public schools, which seems more logic than anything. Sure some party members are mad cranks, but so are some Tories. Hell so are some Lib Dem’s.
In what way? Those that I know who have dropped out of the profession did so due to stress, workload and targets trumping pedagogy.

Would you be happier if Starmer had vowed to overturn Brexit? Given that this would make labour less electable I'm sure your answer would be 'yes', given the tenor of you posts in the bear pit.

Those are factors in most skilled jobs. Teachers have the added obstacle of a very prescriptive training course with endemic bullying. I have heard and experienced a number of stories. Both of my training mentors had been bullied on their QTS but still made my life difficult for a year. At my first school every young teacher I spoke with had had enough of their treatment and were looking for other jobs. The training regime is run by older teachers using it to advance their career path and earn extra money. I would dismantle it and start again, with less emphasis on prescriptive solutions to behaviour management, lesson planning etc. I was a youngster in the City of London in the 1980s and was treated better than when I retrained as a teacher five years ago and that says a lot. Both Labour and the Tories seem to think more teacher training is what is needed. I am pretty sure that is not the case.

Radio 4 news this evening went to the key, these days, swing cities of Blackpool and Stoke and spoke to the local newspaper political writers.
Both completely underwhelmed by what they heard today and not optimistic for Labour’s prospects in their constituencies.
I was genuinely surprised.
These Nuremburg style echo chamber speeches at conferences, whether it be Labour, SNP or Tory, so often lead to a very transient bounce.
Interesting that they dismissed the whooping and dB.

I thought I may see some hope from the Labour party today, but yet again I feel let down by them. We currently just can't get a defined party that means business. We are going the same route as Portsmouth football club, from all over the news to unnoticed.

Listened to Sir Kiers speech in full on R5live and I was really quite pleased/impressed with both what he said and his answers to the hecklers. It is a bit unfortunate he's a bit bland and lacking charisma, not that it should matter but it probably will, but where he's trying to position the Labour party is exactly where the labour party should be, on the centre left, pro business but championing social justice.
A lot more new labour than Corbynism. Sounded pretty obvious that a good few corbynistas and momentum members didnt like it, but bollocks to them imho...... Their ideology is useless without the power to affect change, and I thought Sir Kier was bang on when he said their slogans mean nothing.
Im not actually quite sure what to think in general as what Sir Kier is attempting with where the Labour party should sit in the political spectrum is exactly correct, but I do worry a little of his personal appeal...... and if he didnt win the next election I just hope that Labour will remain where the broadest amount of the electorate sit, somewhere nearer the middle than on the radical fringes.

Think you’re right but the Labour Party will continue to flip flop from left of centre to very left of centre until they eventually self destruct and ask themselves what went wrong

If [MENTION=26594]watford[/MENTION] Gap is displeased that Starmer has not promised to reverse Brexit (I haven't noticed whether this is the case or not), that's fine by me. I can think of far more interesting things to speculate about.
It seems that the hard left hate Starmer and the hard right fear him, as was the case with Blair. Long may that continue
