Jimmy Carr - I do not pay a penny more tax than I have to.

The fact that Cameron said its morally wrong is the funny bit. Oh the irony.

So the conservatives do understand morals then? That's news to me i thought they were completely ignorant of them. Turns out they just turn a blind eye. Except to Jimmy Carr!

Cannot be bothered to read through five pages, but from a personal perspective, I'm a high rate tax payer and have no issue paying back into the system. Whilst I know that a fair proportion is frittered on areas I morally disagree with (i.e. the war in Iraq/Afganistan) a good proportion goes to those who are less fotunate than myself. Having come from a working class background I have seen people who suffer from real poverty and the better support they can get the better. If there was an option to pay a higher rate of tax if I knew it was going to causes I deemed worthy, I'd opt in.

But understandable in a grey (not a black and white) world.
Exactly. Saving 39% in tax payment of millions is clearly wrong and cannot be compared to saving a few hundred on the national median salary of £28k or whatever, even if that is morally wrong too.

Trouble is Cam has f***ed up by only naming Jimmy Carr, you can bet that the papers especially the News International ones will be looking for any Tories or Cam's cronies to name as doing the same. It's obvious that loads of them are at this from footballers to entertainers to politicians and hopefully they will be named and shamed now.

The POINT of taxation is to improve the wellbeing of the nation.

The question is: who should pay it? Jimmy Carr or a nurse? They've made sure that one of them does.

And if more taxes are needed, who should be tapped first?

And if everyone paid their correct share instead of avoiding it then we would all pay less or there would be more in the pot hence less need for cuts

In todays modern economic world Jimmy Carr and all those other individuals and companies are public pariahas. Ther are so many 'sweetheart' deals, so many 'schemes' that are exploitable by those that can afford the specialists to advise them. My guess is that you and me are subject to the full application of the law, punished by imprisonment if we so much as f**k up our tax return, or fined at the least! For me I didn't trust the state at the age of 13 and in October I'm 50! I do not trust it now either. Your are born to be slaves to the state, in the majority. Can you imagine real school assemblies with real advice? 5% of you will attain your goals, 10 to 15% will go a long way to achieving your goals, the rest of you are cash cows for the state. Penguins like the advert.

I think he's paying the price for coming last on a biscuit game with Cameron, Osborne and Alex Boris De-Feffel Johnson ..... if only he'd spunked his load and then chorttled whilst the rest of them guzzled down his cum he'd probably be in the clear ..... and paying less tax

I may be wrong on this, but didn't George Osborne try and legislate against this type of tax avoidance and have his plans blocked by the Lib Dems?

They're not going to be hard to find either. Virtually every wealthy person and successful business avoids tax. Cameron has made a big mistake opening this can of worms.

I'm not sure he's doing anything illegal and from what I hear this is the favoured scheme (the offshore company 'loaning' you your own money) of a lot of Premiership footballers as well as other wealthy people.

Personally what makes me sick is Cameron declaring this 'morally wrong'. You're in charge in Dave, if you don't like it do something about it. Or would that upset your mates from school and all your big business chums? Tax avoidance is an absolute central part of how business operates now, calling it 'morally wrong' when an individual is involved is weak, cowardly and a breathtaking piece of hypocrisy. Especially when your family and the families of all your friends have been doing it for generations.

I'm not saying what Carr and co do is right, but if everyone else is doing it and you're not that makes you a fool. Who wants to pay more tax than they have to?

Absolutely. You run the Government 'Dave'.. they make the laws. So either legislate against it or keep quiet, unless you want to publicly vilify all your millionaire friends too. And while you're at it, maybe some of the big businesses that are routinely allowed to escape paying billions in tax could be brought to book.... Carr's earnings are a drop in the ocean in the grand scheme of things.

Incidentally, it was interesting to see Cameron accuse him of putting the money into a 'very dodgy' scheme as part of that rant. If the scheme is entirely legal - which seems likely - I'd have thought that is bordering on libellous. That would be an entertaining civil case.. Carr v Cameron...

I don't agree with tax avoidance to this level at all. However, to single out one person over what is a minuscule amount compared to the money squandered elsewhere just strikes me as a smokescreen. Tabloid politics.

See. I don't have a problem with people using legal means to avoid tax. The rich and would be rich (the rest of us) would probably seek a way to tweek a bit off the taxman if we could. It's a question of hypocrisy. It's shitbirds like Carr who have lampooned the greedy bankers and taken ostensibly a moral high ground position over the financial crisis (and everything else), while playing the same game as the bankers, that's what f***ing grates. And 'right on' Carr is one of the most prominent PC 'comedians' out there (possibly why he's also about as funny as a motorway smash up), just another hypocritical little shit among a multitude in our celeb/kleptocracy.

Off with his f***ing head

So everyone on here who would 'tweek a bit off the taxman' accepts that means cuts to the NHS etc? Because I don't think you can have it both ways.

Although I accept that the HMRC needs to plug these loopholes for the rich as a number one priority.

I probably would but that is slightly different to paying 1% tax instead of 40% tax don't you think ?

But surely, if it's morally wrong, the amount is irrelevent, otherwise, where's the cut-off point ? £200 a month is ok, but £1000 a month is "repugnant" - sorry I don't see the logic there. Again, I'm not ok with what he's done, but I blame the lawmakers, not the people who take adavantage of it - as long as the're doing so legally.
