Just like none of our other Prime Ministers were.

That is of course technically right if you wish to be pedantic. But you usually know who you are getting as Prime Minister when you have a General Election.

Clarkson says a lot of stuff which is clearly tongue in cheek, he knows that as do most people.

The problem is that it dilutes condemnation when there is something that is truly offensive.

I think you are probably right there. There are far worse things in this world that we should be worried about than a bit of name calling. People being oppressed, tortured, living in fear - those are the things that are truly offensive.

I agree that is true at a General Election. But our electoral system allows parties to choose their leaders as and when they wish, with no recourse to the electorate. Every other party would act in exactly the same way (ie Major, 1990).

There was a Top Gear repeat show on BBC2 earlier this week and Clarkson made a 'window licker' reference about fans of a certain car (can't remember which). He also made a comment to a Japanese waitress (who obviously didn't understand) about being able to see her beaver. Haven't heard of any complaints though and strange that nobody thought to cut these bits out - unless they're considered perfectly OK.

But it is not unusaual for a government to change its leader before an election is held........

Blair
Thatcher
Wilson

all ended up as Prime Ministers that had to be replaced as party leaders before their government ended

Clarkson is a clown,I don't watch anything he is on,he is a prime example of the "me" and "I" society we have now.
the one programme I have seen with him on it was "who do you think you are" and he had me splitting my sides with the words "wheres the money" when he found out his ancestors had been extremely rich and the money disappeared because of someone taking the wrong business turn.......whoops!

I can hear all the foxes laughing now.

Can't stand the bloke.

Calls things 'gay' all the time. He's nearly 50 for Christ's sake!

What a twit. And he wears jeans with suit jackets.

I'm not particularly a Clarkson fan. However I don't understand the hoo-ha about this in the slightest! It appears that some Scottish MPs have taken umbridge that he's been described as 'Scottish'? Would it have been alright if he'd been called 'a one eyed idiot'? Or simply 'an idiot'?

To be honest, I'm getting rather bored of the "I've been offended" brigade. Actively seeking out stuff to be offended by and then loudly and publicly being "shocked" by it strikes me as being incredibly childish.

Alternatively, lets go back to calling blacks Niggers and Coons, Asians Pakis, retards for anyone with a mental disability and the disabled as cripples. That's a step forward for civilisation! The Ross/Thatcher/Clarkson 'gates' are cases where they have opened their gobs and put their foot firmly in it. Ross appears to be the only one to have apologised. Thatcher doesn't even know this is the 21st Century and not the 19th and Clarkson is a self publicist who doesn't give a damn about anyone else as long as he gets his way which would probably involve being allowed to drive at 100mph outside schools etc.

Clarkson says a lot of stuff which is clearly tongue in cheek, he knows that as do most people.

And that makes it alright! Thatcher didn't get away with that excuse. Fact is that he is trying to drum up ticket sales for his show and best way is to be controversial.
