He wasn’t (and has never - happy to be correct) played in a midfield pivot alongside top level defensive midfielders or top level deep lying playmakers (Groß, Gilmour or Mac Allister).

I like him. Has a physicality that most of our other midfielders don’t and is good at getting between the lines.

Peak Albion, Gross played upfield in a 3, or wide right.

We’ve been weak in DM all season, Gilmour is a playmaker and slow, he offers little protection when we’re countered or attacked at pace.

Things evolve. There are opportunities for one or two players present or future to fill the roles in front of the CB’s.

I agree with this. We got the 3 points after all. He played the role where Buonanotte, Joao Pedro and even Welbeck have played for RDZ in the past. Perhaps the lack of flair/creativity in exchange for power, strength, precision and not giving the ball away is the way forward. I’m not arguing that Moder did not contribute to the 3 points more than most (there were few better today), it’s more about his role in an RDZ team. He is an all rounder. But with a better central midfield, do we need those skills in the advanced position he played today?

Thought he did really well today, aside from a potential red card, and definitely added a physical element to the team.

I get that. But what position is he meant to be playing? I don’t think he is top level at the advanced midfielder playmaker or good enough for that deep lying role either. But he essentially got us the win today.

He did a lot right today but we only had 10 shots on goal. He didn’t play the sort of through balls we need in that position or get any good shots off. It’s not that he is not good enough, it’s that in an RDZ formation, I just can’t see where he’ll thrive?

He was our second best player today after Baleba (Lamptey was good after he came on).
I see where you're coming from though: it's instructive that RDZ rarely plays him in the midfield duo and I think we've got other/better players that play higher up the pitch.
There are certain players that worked really well under Potterball (Moder, Webster) that don't fit in as well under DeZerbiball.

I imagine a few NSCers/social media guys will disagree, but I’d have him starting ahead of Gilmour.

Gilmour is a better passer and more cultured, but not by enough to excuse his physical limitations.

I like him, I think him and Baleba together at the base of our midfield looks a winning combination.

I still want/need Gross in our lineup though.

Thought he was excellent until just before the horror tackle, when he gave the ball away and looked a bit 'done'. Wonder how much game time he'd get behind/alongside the striker once Buononotte, Enciso, Pedro, (even Lallana) etc. are all back but if both he and Gross central then prefer them that way around.

In all honesty, I’d like to see enough midfield reinforcements in the summer to be able to play Groß as our first choice CAM/No.10 behind Pedro/Welbeck/Ferguson. I think he is our best attacking playmaker and an absolute assist king.

Absolutely this. He was out for such a long time. A possible career ended injury. Let's just enjoy the fact he's rapidly looking back to being a player who can contribute. We can work out where he plays and how much in time.

Having a young, international as back up CM is exactly what we need.
He's also pretty versatile and can cover a number of positions.

I thought he was excellent on Saturday, as was Gorss and Baleba in that midfield 3. That said, and although I thought differently at the time, he should have been sent off. That had all the hallmarks of a Dahoud v Sheffield United moment, so I'm glad the ref/VAR looked in our favour for a change.

I suspect Dahoud's fall from grace was not just because of the red card.

No, true enough. More that it was real turning point in a match that we really should have won (and probably would have had the red not occurred)

To me, Moder seems to be a great jigsaw piece that doesn't quite fit in the puzzle. Hopefully, with game time and match sharpness he will find a niche. I thought he was starting to fit in well, with huge potential - and then the injury. As other people have said, there is a physicality and abrasiveness about Moder that we lack in our midfield. He looked great today (apart from that tackle).

This makes complete sense to me.

Gross is such an incredible player, we should use him exactly how we were using MacAllister. Somewhere he can really hurt the opponent. All the time the opposition see Pascal Gross as the first receiver from the keeper or centre back, I reckon they are confident they have him contained to a degree
