Jack Butland rejecting Chelsea - Impressive or stupid?

Jack Butland rejected talking to Chelsea on the basis that he wants to play week in week out. I can't decide if this is really refreshing to hear from a young footballer who hasn't been tempted by the big time money and who just care about playing week in week out or if this is a stupid decision missing out on such a big chance to move to a huge club with better coaches and (chaces are) better wages.

Credit to him, if you look through Prem squads there's quite a few young English players just sitting on their hands playing some reserve football.

Better off playing and securing a bigger move later on in your career.

impressive: They already have Thibault Courtois who is a fantastic 'keeper and Cech still has a couple of years in him. Butland is good enough to go to a decent club and be no. 1, not waste away in the ressies until the big guns retire.

Talk that Liverpool are interested in which case he could oust Reina by the start of next season

They have Cech who has at least 5 years left in him, and Courtois who is the same age as Butland and more highly rated. He'd have been stupid to move to Chelsea. Arsenal would be a better move, they struggle for solid keepers and need English players too.

Scott Parker (Chelsea); Shaun Wright-Phillips (Chelsea); Steve Sidwell (Chelsea); Jack Rodwell (Man City); Scott Sinclair (Man City); Daniel Sturridge (Chelsea); Ben Foster (Man Utd); I'm sure there's many, many more... Its no wonder our England team is perennially tin-pot when all of our youth players go and sit on the bench at top clubs and never get a game.

Impressive. His career will most likely stagnate if he goes to Chelsea, a la Foster at man u, Carson at Liverpool and Turnbull at Chelsea. He's a goalkeeper so he's got a long, long career ahead of him, he'll get there soon enough and with a team that he'll get games for. From there he can establish himself and become a credible alternative to Hart.

I agree with all you've said and I reckon it's great to see but then put yourself in his shoes and you start thinking - I could be playing for the European Champions but instead I'm happy at Birmingham. That makes it seem a bit nuts - valid point about othe prem clubs being interested. Really hope he only goes somewhere he gets a regular game
