My apologies.

Based on the recommendations from folk on here and from other reviews I've read, I opted for Al Duomo.

The occasion in question is tomorrow night, so I shall be sure to offer my own opinion afterwards.

Thanks to all of you for your help and suggestions.

What is the occasion?

All this talk of Italian restaurants forced me to visit my favourite tonight.....Casalingo's in Preston St...yet again they didnt fail to impress. One of my parties Creme Brulee was not quite as good as it should have been so they not only knocked it off the bill but also gave us a round of drinks on the house. The true measure of quality is how they fix things when they f*** up and Casalingo's gets top marks. (Of course ideally the Creme Brulee would have been perfect in the first place...but no one is perfect all the time!)

Jamie Oliver's - hands down the best restaurant I've ever been to - I reckon you could do it cheaply too.

I've been twice and have been disappointed both times. Overpriced (three trimmed lamb chops with a couple of green leaves for £14?) and bored of the queueing. The service was pretty poor, but not really the fault of he staff, there just wasn't enough of them. I REALLY wanted to like it, but I won't be going back in a hurry.

No, ideally a creme brulee would be served in a french restaurant .

Italian is dull with a capital DUH

I just cannot get my head round why someone would bother going out to have a pizza, or a pasta dish. A pizza is a quick and easy snack food from the freezer, and the pasta is invariably just smothered in some kind of cheese sause and a sprig of parsley. Bo-ring. And you'll usually pay the thick end of a tenner for either.

Madness.

Gotta agree with this.

As for best Italian. For me it is Jamie's, cheap, very high standard and up their with Londons better offerings, fresh ingredients. Truffle chips are to die for, what more can I say...

How many times have we had this debate?

A good pizza is not a snack you get out of the freezer.

Actually we should just have a Italian food/pizza debate sticky at the top of the board

Most restaurants take the piss with pizza nowadays though - especially the chains. Don't mind paying in a restaurant but I swear the size gets smaller every time and it's often a case of spot the topping. The margins on Italian food must be unbelievable, the pasta is usually nothing better than at home but possibly with 3 prawns on top or 2 scallops, and the pizzas cost £8-10 for a thin bit of bread, some tomato paste, a bit of cheese and about 6 slices of cheap processed meat.

Want to try that Jamies place - looks nice but it is pretty pricey.
