Is there a park and ride from Lewes for the home matches?

if you're getting on at Eastbourne OR Seaford why would you want to get off at Lewes ?
When the very overcrowded train (from Eastbourne) that I was travelling on yesterday arrived in Lewes at 1.30 or thereabouts, the driver (very sensibly) suggested that passengers who wanted a more comfortable arrival at Falmer might wish to get out at Lewes and catch the alternative train that was parked up (empty) at Lewes, waiting to leave about 10 minutes later.

There was no room on the train from Eastbourne for anyone to get on it at Lewes - but I guess that was mainly because the opposition was Eastbourne Borough.

My problem is that if I get the train from Seaford to Falmer, it's easy enough as I'm one of the first people on. The return journey is going to be much harder, as there could be 5,000 people trying to head east by rail, as a guess. That won't be fun, especially at night games, with my kids.

So my point is it would make more sense to drive and do the park and ride thing, but ideally to be able to park to the east of Brighton, for example in the Lewes area, which would make both journeys very straightfoward.

Aug 6th. 12noon. I was planning to either be in the Lansdown and then jump on the train to Falmer OR in the Pelham and then jump on the 28 or the 29 bus to our beloved new home. Lord B, as our resident transport expert, what would YOU recommend?

The advice that the Railway people gave yesterday was for anybody travelling beyond Lewes after the game to catch the first train to Lewes and change there. This seemed to work very well. Yesterday the post-match train service from Falmer to Eastbourne was one train an hour. From Lewes to Eastbourne, there were four trains an hour. From my own observations, there was plenty of room on the Lewes to Newhaven & Seaford trains, once Falmer to Lewes passengers had got off.

The Lansdown, every time. The beer is cheaper.

Yes, I think that's fair enough. The unpleasant bit is going to be the kettling at Falmer as we wait to get to Lewes. I know there were a lot of EBFC fans yesterday who added to numbers but I suspect with a full stadium we're going to have a lot more people on that platform. We'll see how it pans out but longer term I'd really welcome an eastern park and ride, if a site presents itself.

In fairness to the railway staff at Falmer, they managed the queuing very well yesterday. But it was a relatively small crowd.

Same issue for people coming down from Crowborough/T Wells area as for those coming from Eastbourne/Seaford etc. We'll have to drive past the Amex to park at Mithras (which could be rammed) or Mill Rise (miles past) then come back on the P&R.

In the early days there was chat about a P&R in/near Lewes. I'd kind of pinned my hopes on it. Might have to park in Lewes and try the train - but as Lord B says, getting back on the train after a game will be grim. We'll work it out - but a P&R in Lewes as originally discussed would treally help. Might look into this Tertiary college thing - or car share from T Wells might have to be the answer.

The guy who runs the burger bar on the Kingston roundabout is running a car park on match days, in an adjacent field. You can then jump on the bus from there.

Like the sound of that. Presumably it's a Brighton & Hove bus from there? Any idea how frequently they run? I imagine night games might be tricky for the return journey.

I got the train from Eastbourne to Falmer yesterday. £8.10 return.

I left with a minute of injury time to go to catch the 17:04 to Eastbourne. Just as I was about to enter the platform 3/4 stewards said no-one else can go on the platform as it was limited to 300 at one time and we would have to wait 20 mins for the next one. Luckily they let a few more through so I could get on the train I wanted.

If this is the case (300 limit) on the platform then this could put a few people off travelling by train.

The same as from Lewes. Every ten minutes, pre-match on Saturdays. Every fifteen minutes, pre-match for evening games.

Post-match, the current Saturday departures from Sussex University towards Lewes are at 4.56, 5.06, 5.16, 5.26, 5.46, 5.56, 6.06 & 6.21. The weekday evening timetable has departures from Sussex University to Lewes at 9.32, 10.02, 10.32 & 11.02. The bus stop for services towards Lewes is at the bottom of the slip-road that goes up towards Falmer Village.
