[Albion] Is Solly March an Albion legend?

Interesting thoughts about the legend concept but the bolded part... doesn't that get a bit weird? I think, Zamora and Ward aside, Leon Knight might be the old ex-Albion name I've read the most often since joining here... far more than say Kerry Mayo. Does that make Leon Knight a legend?

While he became a complete wastrel and malign social media presence I think Leon Knight qualifies as a legend. He played for us when we were shit, scored a load of goals including some belting headers despite being a midget to get us to the playoffs and took The penalty in the final.
All downhill from there but it's churlish to disavow the great joy he brought in a time of drudgery. Also I feel that the fact he only had the one good season in his entire career and that we got it from him is worth some bonus points.
Anyhow to the original post, yes Solly is a legend. It's not about being a great player so much as being woven into the clubs history. Dunk and Solly are consistent threads in the story of our Blooming. Knight is the most colourful weft of the prior withdean years.

IMO legendary status is only achieved when a career comes to an end and we still remember their exploits on the field. In this respect Solly is still building his legacy. He will achieve true legendary status in five/ten years time when he has eventually retired from playing for us.

I know what you mean but I think some people reach it earlier. Like some people in some fields reach legend status after death (like great artists) but then you get the term 'living legend'.

To suggest the Messi isn't a legend, both for Argentina and Barca would be obtuse. Likewise suggesting Zaha isn't a Palace legend.

This tells me that it is ‘a person having a special place in public esteem because of striking qualities or deeds’. I have to concede therefore that my previous interpretation might be wrong, and Solly (and Dunk) might already have achieved this status.

Legendary status should only be used sparingly imho. Some of the current squad may well get there but I reckon Solly and Dunk are nearest to it. One name not mentioned so far I think….Peter O’Sullivan…Sully.. 11 years, nearly 500 appearances, played I think in every division (maybe not Div 4?). Great player. He is a legend.

We have never won anything, but right now we have the finest squad and results in our history. Listing journeymen who we remember fondly through blue and white tinted spectacles is as pointless and needless (and needy) as this thread. I may list some more after I've had my dinner.

The biggest issue for Solly is he’s spent most of his career being misused, and in our Championship promotion season he was regularly outshone by Knockaert in that position. This means he’s never really had that one defining moment that many legends have for their clubs, nor has he consistently produced the numbers that would generally define an attacking player as a club legend.

But he could well be a one club man, will have played in multiple positions, often sacrificing himself for the side, and yet in our best ever side we’re finally seeing the player he threatened to be 6-7 years ago when he was getting games down the right.

Saying that, I still think he needs a moment, a thing that cements his place in that legendary category for all fans.

That was the only game I missed that season (believe it or not!) so that isn’t as ingrained in my mind as it is in others’ probably. But fair shout.

He was my favourite player when I first went late 70's.

Solly is a legend without . . .up there with O' Sullivan. Which is above several other 'legends'
