Although he made a few strange selections early on in the season, I really think that fully knows what he is doing.

MM gets my vote:clap:

1. Mullery. He took us up 2 divisions in 3 years and kept us in what was then Div 1. OK he had a legacy from Taylor to build on; but he didn't squander it.
2. Adams. OK so he got his mates from Fulham & Brentford to turn us round. But it worked didn't it?
3. McGhee - I think: for displaying more commitment than Taylor (and Coppell althoug I note the anecdotes on this thread). Certainly if he keeps us up.

What do people think about

a. Pat Saward: Always liked him and his team always played attacking footie.
b. Mike Bailey: Did take us to our highest ever position in the football league....but with some pretty boring football.
c. Chris Cattlin. Seems to have a cult following but I always thought he didn't do enough with the players he had. Also remember that 'inspired' tactical change against Saints in the 6th round of the cup in 86. He brought back Mick Ferguson (who was crap) at centre forward and we lost 2-0.

Mike Bailey is very high on my list. The leaugue position doesn't lie and he never got the credit he deserved. We didn't concede many in those days. The successful teams in recent years ensure the do not concede rather than look to entertain. Under MA and MM we have had sucess from a series of 1-0s and no one wanted them out...how times have changed.

The greatest achievement was staying in the top flight once Alan Mullery had got us there. He may appeared tactically nieve at times, but AM choose the open style, but when needed we could close up to get the results when they mattered.

Alan Mullery was number one.

Chris Cattlin built a good team after it had been denuded of vital players, which is why we got relegated. If we had play-offs back then, the whole history would be changed.

Getting out of the bottom division doesn't count for much. Getting out the second bottom division on a tight budget is a bit more difficult. But several managers have done this. But keeping us in our current division.

Six more points and Mark McGhee is in contention as number three and he could get better.

For the Period 99-05 I have gone for Adams over McGhee.

That could well change around next season.

Over the last 30 years I'm tempted to give the title to Mullery as he did get us to the promised land, and keep us there, in a very short time.

However, we did have a ground at the time and a wealthy chairman to support the manager. I'd like to think that MA and MM would both be able to do the same in similar cirumstances.

IMO Mullery is the greatest ever Albion manager, regardless of the fact he money and we had a ground, because he delivered us top division football. We were a small unfashionable club that reached the promised land.He built on Taylors 4th place finish, and remember if Saints and Spurs hadnt played out a draw on the last day of the season we would have had back-to-back promotions way back then.

In more recent times MM has done an excellent job so far and hopefully he will lead us even further upwards, but much as i enjoyed Cardiff, it seems to be forgotten that when he first took over we seemed to lose our way and went from automatic promotion place to worrying as to whether we would make the play offs. Having said that he has brought on the youngsters brilliantly and our present position is well in excess of what most of us would have accepted way back in August.Perhaps if this debate takes place again in a few years he will be the undisputed king.

Adams gets the nod just for me as the best in the timescale stated as he won us our first trophy in far too long, and the backbone of his team won us the consectutive title and some are still achieving this season.

don't recall Gritt losing his job in the first half of 97!

The current manager. Well I think we are surprising ourselves this season. However for most of last season we were poor and he did inherit a side in an automatic promotion spot, but he led us to 4th.

As this false statement has now been repeated twice in this thread, it had better be corrected. McGhee did not inherit a team in an automatic promotion spot, he inherited a team in fourth place and heading downwards. Arresting that decline and ensuring that we finished fourth was a superb achievement by McGhee.

I think people too easily forget the Booker interval where we went 4 games without a win. This suggested to me that there were things wrong with the "Coppell" squad that needed fixing. That's what McGhee did, perhaps in a way that did not endear him to some fans, but I say to those people, too bad, the results are all that count and his achievements should not be minimised.

That is right. We had dropped to 8th place when McGhee arrived.
His first game with us was 1-1 at Peterborough.

Didn't we get relegated at Grimsby?

Yes but if we had held out for a draw at Stoke we would have finished above them assuming all following results had stayed the same.

Mcghee is excellent!!! I'm 18 so i haven't a lot to look back on but with the current situation he has really shown his true qualities with a tiny budget and got 110% out of the players we have on offer and shown big clubs and small in this division that we mean business
*rant over*;)

This thread is now a year old.

Just to reprise: "Tactically and motivationally I have massive respect for McGhee .. but he has NOT been tested in the transfer market."

Now I believe the question has been answered. Other than KCR and Carole, his acquisitions have been woeful. And inthe meantime we have sold:
Currie
Cullip
Virgo
Harding
Knight

and let others go on loan

Reid next?

Reid won't go. He was very positive on the radio on Sat. He is eager to get back in the team.
Those sales have helped keep the wolf from the door whilst Lewes continue to try and mess us up.

So £125,000 for our top scorer (and ONLY proven regular scorer) was good business and kept the wolf from the door.

Also concerned about the number of players McGhee has fallen out with including ones like McGammon that he brought into the club cos he already knew them!

£125K was excellent business considering he could have walked for free in June. Any money coming in is keeping the wolf from the door.

Why is it always McGhee falling out with players? Isn't it that he isn't standing for any prima donna tantrums from players who think they can do what they like including not turning for training on time and dictating who should be in the team?
