Is Mark McGhee Brighton's greatest ever manager ?

I am not saying Taylor was a bad manager. He did a good job. All I was saying was that he was not as good as Adams.

The same Peter Taylor who took off a forward for a midfielder when we were beating Chesterfield 2v0 AT HOME only for us to then invite them to attack and end up drawing 2v2?

All of our managers have made mistakes - Adams arsed up at Cheltenham when we lost 3-1, McGhee dropped Knight for away games we went on to struggle in until he was brought on, and I'm sure Coppell also had the odd blunder.

Taylor didn't just sit back & let Adams' team win the league - it was a key part of that season that he gave us something extra to kick on and win promotion.

I still find it amazing that some people still think Taylor sat at home with his feet up from October - May and did sod all because it was a foregone conclusion that the team that Adams built would win the league and improve their position after he left with no input at all from Taylor !

In my opinion it's Adams v Mghee
Adams gave us alot of the players we have now, and given a excellent team spirit.
Mghee has worked very hard on a tight budget, and mainly had to work with load signings and the youngsters.

I voted Adams, by a whisker from McGhee, if McGhee left today. McGhee may soon surpass Adams in my opinion.

But greatest 1999 to 2005 is a totally different thing to greatest ever. Badly worded poll.

It's worth noting too that Adams had a relatively large budget on which to produce the Division 3 Championship team - we probably have less of a budget both in relative (well obviously!) and absolute terms today for McGhee to do what he is with it.

So its probably MM for me, just ahead of Adams.

MM is my favourite, and he is a clear leader, so I am unlikely to change my mind.

He has not been tested in choosing players. Sometimes, I am mystified with his team selection, even more than his tactics.

I don't rate Coppell, think Micky Adams was overated (although he has improved with his spell at Leicester) and Brian Horton was better than expected. He was good at choosing players, although he signed quite a lot and some were useless. I was unimpressed with Brian Horton's tactics.

Interesting we have a visit to Stoke and this is where we got relegated under Coppell. Can MM get a better result at Stoke? (w/o BZ)

You sound like a lady who knows the form horse but backs an outsider because everybody around her is placing money on it.

The fact is DK has brought a whole array of super managers to this club and deserves every credit for it.

Personally I think that Micky Adams is the best that I have witnessed in the fifty odd years I have watched this club.

There has been some comment on this thread about the late Peter Taylor. His captain Dennis Burnett was once asked if he were a good manager. Dennis replied,
"If a good manager sits in his office all day with his feet up on the desk, chain smoking whilst reading The Sporting Life, then yes he is a good manager,"
Taylor has also been credited with introducing Peter Ward to the Albion. The fact is his coach Ken Gutteridge signed Wardy after threatening to leave the club if Taylor got his way and didn't sign our future record goal scorer.

Certainly Alan Mullery should be on the list of Albion's Greatest Manager. With no managerial experience before his appointment he transformed this club from a run of the mill Third Division side into one of the most exciting teams in all the divisions. He also secured two promotions and introduced us to the top division for the first and only time in our history.

Another glaring omision is Billy Lane. He was responsible for getting us out of the old third division for the first time. His team was exciting to watch also.

I see yet another mention of the late Peter Taylor. If you are thinking of the time he shared with Cloughie at the helm of Derby County and Notts Forest then I can see the connection. At Brighton he promised a lot but delivered bugger all.

I agree with you, how can we forget Steve Gritt? He would certainly get everybody's vote of the greatest miracle worker at the Albion. He is certainly up there amongst the very best.
