Always a dilemma. In the 70s many teens supported a top club (United, Leeds, Chelsea, you know) and the Albion. They would never play each other would they, so it didn’t matter. You would also support Rangers or Celtic.

Should you continue to support your “top” club or ditch them now we’re in the big league? What defines loyalty?
Precisely.

Leeds mean nothing to me, now, but they certainly did in 1970.

I have had a soft spot for Liverpool for 30 years because the are the team of my old pal and neighbour with whom I watch telly football. Delighted when the won the CL etc.

But I don't support them. I don't get anxious before their games, and agitated during them. I don't punch the air and leap around the living room when they score.

I was listening to TS yesterday morning, a guy messaged in to say he was taking his son to Anfield for his first game , my problem was they live in Norwich , why the hell does he not take him to Carrow Road instead,

Spot on. My mum's family are from Leeds and she was born in Gelderd Road, a goal-kick from Elland Road, and so Leeds were my 'big' team in the late 60s and early 70s. But I'm Brighton born and Hove bred and as soon as we were in the same division, there was no contest.

As for my soft spots: local team, Whitehawk; EFL club QPR; Scottish team Partick Thistle, German team St Pauli, international side Poland.

When it looked likely that the Albion was going to cease to exist, I did consider which league team I would support in the future.
Obviously, couldn’t be our 2 nearest neighbours( at that time), Palace and Pompey(tw@s), don’t really like ‘big clubs’, it would go against the grain to be an armchair fan of any of the big 4, as it was then. I wanted someone fairly easy to get to now and again, not a hugely successful club, and one that I could feel a part of.

I settled on Charlton Athletic, they weren’t bad in 1997, and had the added bonus that I could still hate Palace.

Very happy I still only support one club now though.

I'm still scarred by Notts County beating us in the play off in '91. Couldn't support them.
Whereas I've recently just about got over Bristol Rovers beating us 8-2 in 1973. So Calde is not dead to me for going there. Plus it was nice of them to give us Bobby Zamora.

Yes.

I follow a continental team as some of you are aware Schalke 04. (Member of the supporters group).
and a Scottish team Cowdenbeath (Shareholder)

Each bring me considerable pain and despair, though I did get a ticket for the last time Schalke made the cup final. (5-0 win)

You could probably ask a similar question in many towns and cities with a football club, including Brighton.

I was at the Norwich match yesterday with my Schalke scarf and woolly hat. The right shade of blue so no one noticed.

Yes of course, we pride ourselves at being diverse and inclusive in the teams we support. Most of us support multiple EPL teams alongside Brighton. I often wear Man City, Liverpool, Brentford and even non EPL clubs like Millwall who we have such close bond with here at Brighton. I also starting to fall in love with MK Dons, I love their deep history.

The problem with this sort of question is that people who were born and raised in the Brighton area, who’ve lived here all of their lives (perhaps with a break for college) find it hard to fathom how people can support other teams.
Not really - I think more a case of not understanding why Brighton isn’t the first team for those that DID grow up in Brighton. I think every Brighton fan understands that there is life before BHAFC if you weren’t born here.

I was born in London and my Dad was a Chelsea supporter - no doubt Chelsea or subsequently Palace (because that was the local team) would have been my first team had we not moved to Brighton when I was 7.

I’ve always had the habit of supporting my local team
I think most of those who post on NSC probably do - out of the many members that now post from abroad or outside Sussex, I think most probably have a natal/childhood connection to the Club.
My in-laws are now sadly departed but I know they were delighted that we settled nearby and immediately kept the family’s Albion flame alive.

I get that. There is a strong sense of heritage isn’t there?

When my Manchester United supporting niece (because my BiL is a Man U fan) went with her Shoreham-based, Brighton-supporting boyfriend to watch Brentford at the Amex on 27th January, I texted my Mum to say ‘Dad (who died about 10 years ago) would have been so pleased that at least two members of the family were at the Amex that day and that it’s come the full circle’.

My niece’s bf is a bit ‘meh‘ and I think my niece could do ‘better’ tbh but he is a STH NStander and managed to get her to a Brighton game for the first time ever, so for that, he rocks!

I moved from Sussex 29 years ago. My 16 Yr old daughter supports the Albion because I do, but she has no experience of living in Sussex, and we have no family connections still there. I've always said that's it's acceptable if she were to start spending her own money to watch a club, perhaps if she goes to university, then she could support that team. When you spend your (short supply) cash on a team then you've invested in them and, in my view, have a right to support them.

(Armchair) fan at work 'supports' both Man United and Spurs.

He has no connection with either club (ie not local, no fans of the club in the family etc)

Now THAT is wrong.
