[Albion] Is Graham Potter overrated as a Premier League manager?

I am a big fan of Gross - So why isn't he getting 6 or 7 goals per season especially with so much more possession.

I know possession doesn't guarantee goals but I have been surprised by Gross' lack of goal return in recent seasons.

He’s a few years older and slower than in Hughton’s day. IMO he shouldn’t be anywhere near the 2022 Albion team.

I’m not sure going from no pace to still having no pace makes much of a difference.

His position has changed. He played behind Murray under Hughton and had wingers (and Murray) creating space for Pascal to walk into.

You could be right about the age being the reason but for Most of his career. Milk has actually turned quicker than Gross.

That's not a criticism. I still like him as a player and he works hard.

Substandard, out-of-form strikers that have to be played as we've no one else.

A consistent failure to address a glaring reoccurring issue in striker recruitment smacks of negligence.

There's no point in farming for the future if you're starving in the present.

Sort it out and pay the going rate, Albion.

Or Potter will soon enough realize that his stock is falling and leave for a paymaster that will give him the tools he needs.

It’s never been clearer.

The club have failed over 10 transfer windows and the best part of £300m in fees to provide CH/GP with reliable strikers.

Mac Allister, Lamptey, Trossard and March made a stack of chances and half chances.

Our ‘strikers’ make the wrong runs, hit balls against static lumps like Hanley, have zero composure in the moment.

We tore the ten man defence of Norwich apart today.

No way is this result on the coach.

The club imho should halt this summer £m’s here and there on “ones for the future”.

Just pay the money for striker/s.

I hear what you’re saying, but Potter persists with the same tactics and style of play getting the same results. That is on the coach and not the players, no matter the quality of the players.

Strange isn't it. He used to be so adventurous. Now he's just stuck in a rut selecting the same borrrrring players every game. Kind of feels a bit like hughton at the end. Run out of ideas.

Personally, I wish we played a counter attacking game and I’m relaxed about whether or not Potter’s here next season.

But I do think the club have been shit in the forwards department over 5 very long years. Building began at Easter 2017 after the Wigan win.

26 goals scored, only Watford and Norwich have fared worse. Famously it was our achilles heel last season and Hughton suffered the same shit ….. in essence veteran Muzza kept us up.

I don’t think he does select the same players though. He just doesn’t coach them to do anything different.

I can still think of more reasons for keeping him than sacking him.
But that's very much dependant on the manner of such a defeat.

If we get served up:-

Starting slowly.
Unable to breakdown rigid banks of 5 and 4.
71% possession.
2 shots on target.

Losing 0-1 to Josh Sargent goal (78) who benefited from 3 passes after a loose Albion pass on the edge of the Norwich box.

Then I think I'd have found the end of my tether.

I thought I was going to be sick when Pukki turned Dunk on 78 minutes.

31 chances. A penalty. What more can a manager do? Players have to score goals. End of Hughton era we weren’t even creating a chance.

Realty is we haven’t signed any goal scorers. Brentford even had a gamble on Eriksen who has sparked them into life. We’re listless thinking Maupay and Welbeck is enough. What’s a manager supposed to do if he doesn’t have another forward to bring on?

Wake up and smell the coffee because this is about the depth of goal scoring quality in our squad.

I’m torn.

On one hand after almost 3 seasons I still don’t think Potter knows his best team, I’d also expect that by now basics would be in place like having a nailed on penalty taker but it doesn’t seem to be the case. I think he’s slightly out of his depth.

However I’ve gone on record as saying the board have let Potter down in the last 3 or 4 transfer windows. Literally the entire football world know that Brighton need a striker upgrade. Well we don’t need one anymore, we need at least two IMO, I’m done with Maupay, he’s just not up to it. Imagine for a second Toney in this side, we would be a different proposition entirely. Potter can only work with what he has and right now at the business end of the pitch that is not much.
