[Albion] Is Graham Potter overrated as a Premier League manager?

No, you can't blame Potter for lack of investment striking options or players missing from 12 yards.....although Graham publicly saying he's happy with his striking options doesn't do him any favours

Hang around, you may be surprised how many do

And then compare that to the team that started v Man City in our first PL game of Ryan; Bruno, Duffy, Dunk, Suttner; Brown, Stephens, Propper, March; Gross; Hemed

Potter undoubtedly has better players available to him. BUT - he had better players than the current squad last season. With White and Burn sold, Webster long term injured and Sarmieto only just coming back he's been forced to use the same centre back pairing, March and Gross when all of them have more Premier League experience but are also four and a half years older and slower.

One of the other posts saying this feels like the end of a cycle with big changes next season feels right. We might well be seeing Mwepu and Caciedo regularly, Undav and Mitoma fighting for the attacking option spots and Van Hecke (extremely well regarded at Blackburn) in for Duffy.

Potter has a better squad than Hughton but this current squad is far from his strongest, especially when you take injuries and Covid into account,

when you put a penalty into the burger van you deserve **** all , we don't look like we'd catch gonnorreah at the moment , shithouse , i'm going round to beat the neighbours up again now.....good nigh.

Yes with another manager Brighton would have won 9-0 today because that is how football works.

Can I refer you to the post immediately preceding yours? :lolol:

He has to take a part of the blame obviously. He is the manager. That’s not the same thing as saying he is overrated though Icy.

I have no idea how anyone can even begin to blame Potter for the misses today, but carry on

Imo he is not vaguely over rated, he is playing with one hand tied behind his back and wearing a blindfold

When someone is responsible for performance/results in any business then they have to take responsibility no matter the outcome. I’m not sure why you are spoiling for a fight but I can guarantee that Potter will be feeling responsible. Still the best man for the job though.

I am not spoiling for a fight, I just don’t get why the manager can be expected to take the blame for players not hitting the target when his tactics have brought the chances about. He may well take the blame though, it’s the way he deflects criticism from the players imo

You have no way of knowing that unless you are privy to his coaching sessions, team selection meetings and interactions with players, coaches and owner. Same goes for Junior.

I still find it so odd how football fans forget that during a good run you will soon go on a bad run, and during a bad run, you will soon go on a good run. It really is truly bizarre. Unless Potter gets sacked, which is highly unlikely, at some point relatively soon we will win a few games and it will be back to how amazing he is again. I find it astonishing how people just never seem to learn, and how utterly thick so many football fans are. I'd love to see a club owned by the fans who get to make the big decisions. It would be hilarious.

Potter is a very good, relatively young and inexperienced manager doing a decent job. He has the potential to become a real top class coach, but that will take a few more years and could go either way. Which is exactly the sort of manager we want at our level. When he goes, we will replace him with a similar prospect.

It would be nice if he could work out how to win at home soon (tomorrow, ideally). Although I genuinely think the fans should take a portion of that responsibility / blame as well.

Nail on head.

Potter has coached the team to a single point from 7 games. His overall win % record is now Inferior to Chris Hughton. We’ve failed to score from 180 mins of football against the worst defence in the league. I also assume he’s responsible for selecting Neal Maupay as todays pen taker.

Potter is not solely responsible. But he’s part of the team that has done poorly. I’d argue he’s got the biggest influence on our team too.

I think i can have an opinion without needing to be part of the club. Thanks for the snide reference to Junior.

He can’t take penalties for people or head the ball past Krul so on its own that game is not his fault.

It was, however, utterly predictable and typical of the whole of his reign.

Change the players, change the coach or carry on just like that? What would you do?

With one goal in 7 though let’s ditch the nonsense that Potter is in any way exciting to watch

Fair enough, I knew this would descend into a witch hunt, so I’m put of here

It’s never been clearer.

The club have failed over 10 transfer windows and the best part of £300m in fees to provide CH/GP with reliable strikers.

Mac Allister, Lamptey, Trossard and March made a stack of chances and half chances.

Our ‘strikers’ make the wrong runs, hit balls against static lumps like Hanley, have zero composure in the moment.

We tore the ten man defence of Norwich apart today.

No way is this result on the coach.

The club imho should halt this summer £m’s here and there on “ones for the future”.

Just pay the money for striker/s.

Not witch hunting. A genuine discussion. I’m a fan of Potter still. Just 3 months ago he was the best thing since sliced bread on here. There’s a quality manager in there somewhere.

Agreed but a fit Izquierdo and a Murray circa 2016-2018 - both available to Hughton in 2017/18 - and that combined 17 goals - would definitely strengthen Potter's squad.
Having a midfielder like Gross score 7 goals or even having Gross score 7 goals was also something Hughton had in season one at least. Something Potter - despite Lallana, Moder, Bissouma etc has never had.

I am a big fan of Gross - So why isn't he getting 6 or 7 goals per season especially with so much more possession.

I know possession doesn't guarantee goals but I have been surprised by Gross' lack of goal return in recent seasons.
