I just wonder what peoples assessment of Barnes would have been if he was playing for City yeterday or any other team thats visited the Amex? "multi million pound player"???? all this talk of him being the clubs top goal scorer is a smoke screen. Apart from taking a good penalty from what ive seen he offers very little. CMS is on a poor run of form but makes up for his lack of goals with work rate, he just hasnt had the service for much of this season

Becuase most people judge a player on what they see, and not what the stats tells them

Actually, most people (on here) judge a player on what they want to see, or just the worst (or best) moments of a players performance.

Yesterday Barnes played a couple of great balls, he was frequently losing his marker and creating space, several times in goal scoring positions. Yet, people focus on one shot that went high and wide (nowhere near as wild a shot as Navarro's that nearly hit the screen, though slaughtered much more for it), they ignore his defensive play, they criticise him for having the discipline not to run wildly around the pitch following the ball and leaving us exposed. Anyone who thinks he was by far our worst player yesterday doesn't know football. And I hate when people say things like that. Any Brighton player that was the worst on the day, was only the worst by a marginal distance.

Like most of the team he needs a season to find his feet at this level if besides,Gus feels he has the ability to warrant a place in the first team so who are we to argue.

Why.T.F do so many sub Sunday league class footie players on here feel they know more about the game than Gus?

What level of football did you used to play at that gives you such a wonderful insight?

I don't understand how people can have such short memories. I presume if anyone criticise Barnes with vitriol and no balancing argument that they weren't a fan of the club last season. Opinions null and void.

I was a fan of the club last season and didn't rate him then either. Problem now is he's in a division higher.

He's not good enough if you want your team to be pushing for the top end of the table. With the promotion push next year he probably wont get much of a look in.

If Barnes is Shit then what does that say about the rest of the team Including CMS

As I said they need to offer something different. Those names you have mentioned all do. You just proved my point.

Yeah, once at half time and once at full time! I loved the way he shot off down the tunnel, really gave the RB the slip!

I'll be with Al Bion, Padders and (hopefully) Prince Mohammed Buzzer.

I am sure we can reconcile our differences, myself and Mr Burns are BESSIES now x

I wish you two would stop flirting with each other.lol

I'd love to witness the making up of this turbulent relationship. Wrexham it is then!!

I reckon i could have got double figures in that league 1 season with the chances he had. we created hundreds of opportunites.
Im pretty sure he'd play anywhere as long as he gets a game.

The danger of mindless prejudice is that it leads you places you really don't want to go.

Barnes strike rate (goals to shots - 20 from 90 attempts with 60% on target) was the best in the team last season.
His strike rate (goals to time on the pitch 20 from 38 appearances + 11 as sub) was the best in the team last season.

This season he has better stats than CMS in terms of goals to games and although his "shots on target" rate has slipped to 35% he remains our joint leading scorer and his total of 3 assists is second only behind CMS.

Add to that the fact that since Barnes switched from playing central striker to playing wide and giving cover to our somewhat suspect full backs our defensive fraility has been a little less marked and, in a side that is struggling to create chances, those are not bad figures at all, Certainly indicative of someone who, far from being disinterested, contributes enough to at least command some respect. Is Barnes the finished article? Certainly not. He is currently playing below his best but there is plenty in mitigation of that.

Fishing trips is one thing and in some instances it is excusable (Holroyd/Dickinson et al...................) but sometimes (Davies) orchestrated hate campaigns get in the way of opening your eyes and seeing the potential, and in this case the reality, of what we have got.

Its not "mindless prejudice" at all my friend. You keep referring back to last season. Last season is well and truly over and we are finding out THIS SEASON that he just cannot cut it. Once again we would all love to be proved wrong but just cannot see it happening. You also need to remember that last year was a million times easier than this and stats mean f*** all compared to the champ. He takes a good pen granted but hasnt given our attack any Teeth this year at all. Forget about his defending, he is primarily there to play as a striker/attacking player and he really doesnt look the part. IMO he would be better suited to dropping down a level and getting some games there for a while until his confidence returns somewhat. Then perhaps we might see a different Barnes to this but for me, he lacks the class/speed to be a decent champ player.

Allways happy to be proved wrong though.

You've made your opinions abundantly clear.
I just wish (and I bet every person in football) I could be so certain about a 21 year old, who has played 16 games @ the highest level he's ever played. Predominately out of position due to playing in a side, that until yesterday was unable to 'boss' the midfield.

Calde and Buckley were ripping BC apart yesterday, both playing in a natural position.
Vincelot didn't play well yesterday, Barnes wasn't hugging the touchline.
If he was, Sparrow and Bridcutt, would have been over run as usual.
