Having watched Julien Temple's film about McGowan, in which Shane speaks about the number of people forced to leave Ireland during the Hunger and about the Irish diaspora, particularly in London and the East coast of America, I wondered which musicians have some Irish heritage. Of course The Beatles, The Smiths, Oasis, Dexys, Lydon, but also Kate Bush, Presley, Cobain, Hendrix, Springsteen, Bing Crosby, Judy Garland, Beyonce, Christina Aguilera, Britney, Mariah Carey, Taylor Swift. The list seems to go on and on and on. I was half expecting to see that ABBA's great grandparents had arrived in Sweden from County Kerry (or Mayo of course).

I should note that this is not an excuse for posting Ed Sheeran's 'Galway Girl' to this thread. Instead, here's Phil Chevron's masterpiece that tells the story of some of those who left:

Some awesome Irish bands in here, so I'm going to do something a bit different.

A few years ago I was visiting a friend in Munich when the Backstage Free Festival was on. Backstage is a site in Munich with a few small venues, one big venue and a beergarden all on the same site.

On the day we went Ill Nino were headlining the big room but before seeing them I accidentally caught a band I'd never heard of headlining one of the smaller venues. Firkin are a Hungarian band who play Irish music in a folk-punk style, and they're ****ing brilliant. Live, they were like The Pogues on speed. They play a mixture of their own songs and some traditional tunes, mostly in English, but they did release a full album of traditional Irish music in Hungarian. (They also have a very hot violin player...) They were put together by the flute player, who also owns the "brand".

This is a fantastic album! , and film for that matter. Just like the Ronnie Drew piece above, this tells the story of another significant part of Irish history.

This track is as good a place as any to get a flavour of it.

Another beautiful Irish voice is that of Florian Cloud de Bounevialle O'Malley Armstrong, better known as Dido. Although a Londoner, she attributes her vocals to her Irish father.
