I always turn lights off if not in the room.
I get logs from a nearby farm to burn in the hearth instead of central heating.
I always 'cook' instead of buying ready meals / takeaways etc
I ride my bike instead of driving for anything under 10 mile round trip.
If I buy wine, I get stuff that you could clean out your radiators with
I don't have SKY or anything

What else could I be doing? Suggestions please :)

Check all insurance policies before you renew, check whether there is a cheaper deal available elsewhere, there probably will be.

Don't feel obliged to keep your mortgage with one bank/building society year after year, shop around for the best deal. Do the same with your gas/electricity supplier, internet, landline and mobile phone.

On the wine front - cheap wine is nice mixed with a tin of peaches/juice. Used to make tubs of the stuff for house parties.

Tesco - 3kg pasta for £1

Find a rich old lady and chase her cat stuck up a tree. Rescue it and hope for a mention in the will or a reward.

Make sure you defrost your fridge/freezer regularly as any build up of ice makes it use twice as much electricity.
If you have an immersion heater for your hot water then check the thermostat is working, get a thick lagging jacket for it and a timer so that it isn't 24 hours a day.

Turn your tv's and computers off etc instead of leaving on standby.

Use economy 7 time for your dishwasher and washing machine.

Get a woodburning stove instead of burning logs in the hearth as 85% of the heat goes up the chimney. Make sure your logs have been air dried for at least six months otherwise you create steam instead of heat.

as a STUDENT i am now down to 20 pounds a week to live on(including 12 pound train home every week)

so....every FIVE to SIX weeks i spend 30 pounds on shopping. mainly 20 pounds meat, 10 pounds sauces/tinned tomatos/kidney beans etc.

dont buy anything with a name. by own brand(except marmite and hellmans mayonaise)

in the house we dont have the heating on. if we do we put it on for 1 hour at around 8 to warm up house. and all the doors and windows closed. we also heat the house with the heat from cooking in the kitchen

mains are always off unless something is being used.

if watching tv we make the effort to watch 1 in the lounge together.

not really rules but everyone is very aware of each others finances.

oh and ALWAYS FREEZE MEALS IN BULK!:clap2:

That is sound advice, but ALWAYS only use (i) dishwashers, (ii) tumble driers and (iii) washing machines when you are at home and awake.

One of the most common causes of house fires we attend are due to dishwashers, tumble driers or washing machines developing electrical faults and catching fire. It happens alot.

Make sure all your plugs have the "kitemark" too
