Good luck, from someone who has experienced first hand of the pain and fallout of a relative with a heavy gambling addiction well done you have taken the first step.

Just remember that those around you are usually trying to help no matter how much they p1ss you off, they are not trying to punish you and find someone who will listen to you when you need someone to talk to.

Couldn't agree more. I lost close to a £100k a few hears ago, so started running and going to the gym. It also had the added bonus of being able to say to people I had lost 2 stone because of exersise, and not from the stress of losing so much!

I suppose if you are 100k in debt being able to run fast is handy.

I may come back to this thread through time to time. Anyone else is welcome to use this thread to offer support and ask for help as well.

As an old regular of this forum I find it important for myself to let you know. I've been a compulsive gambler for seven years. My first bet was when I was 11 but it wasn't when I was 17 when I started. Now 24 I have come to accept I have a huge problem. I've gone the longest without a gamble since I started all those years ago, almost 6 months until last week. I don't know what triggered it as I've been through a lot worse and have been attending GA meetings supporting others quite regularly. Football is a huge problem for me as gambling is heavily influenced from it which is why I never go to matches anymore. But anyway today is the first day on the path to the first 90 days again. I'm 1066 and I'm a compulsive gambler.

Day 1

You have admitted that you have an issue... That's the start...

I have been doing a footy accumulator every week since I was about 10... A Cpl of quid a sat is fine, plus I enjoyed it and always broke even of made a few hundred a season... but when that dam roulette machines were introduced I started to gamble on them. I lost £500 in 15 mins and £150 on another few occasions (not much money to some people but it was to me) I felt so sick. The feeling of losing that money, realising what you could have brought, thinking what the misses would say... I had to stop... This sounds silly but I opened up an online betting account so I could still do my £10 a sat on footy. I limited the account to £10 a week. This stopped me from going in the bookies.

Every week that passed without going in the bookies I thought as a week where I won a Cpl hundred quid (because I didn't put it in the machines)

DON'T CHASE LOSSES (THEY'VE GONE) HOWEVER EVERY DAY YOU DON'T BET YOU WILL BE SAVING THE AMOUNT YOU'VE LOST TEN FOLD.

Good luck 1066.I have a mate who won't admit he has a problem he has lost 70k in 6years.We were staying in Cheltenham a few years back Aldershot won with a 94th min to us that's like winning the cup ,my mate lost an 8 grand bet that day and spent the night in his room sulking as it totally rules his life.

Good luck. Best to drop the habit. Gamblers are intensely boring people to suffer as most addicts are. Had a mate who used to play on the fruit machines. I never understood them and have never gambled in my life, one rule I have when it come to vices, anyroad he would invite you doen the pub and I you would be stuck standing next to a fruit machine, pint in hand watching this mongoloid smash flashing buttons and shit away hundreds of pounds. Remember him getting really excited when he won 150 quid until I pointed out to him that I've seen him plough 500 into machines in one night. Stopped hanging about with him soon after. Dull.

Gambling only works when you have got money on tap and you can afford to lose. If you are gambling to pay your rent, mortgage or to feed your family it doesn't work.

The worst thing you can do is feel it's your lucky day. I've placed two bets in my life, one was a £5 on Bruno to beat Tyson and the other was a £5 on a 33/1 horse tip. The horse came in and we got another tip a week later, all my friends placed money on the second tip and lost what they got from the first one. I didn't feel it was worth the gamble, kept my money and haven't gambled since.

I had another friend who was addicted to fruit machines, a group of us we were in the pub having a drink and he spent a couple of hours feeding a fruit machine, once he spent all his money, and looking very sorry for himself, he had the cheek to ask if someone would buy him a pint. Gamblers tend to suck energy out of people and want sympathy for being unlucky.

The only gambles in life you should take are on yourself, because at least then you have some control over the outcome.

How would you know that if you have only ever had two bets in your life?. My skills at the roulette table have paid many a bill over the years, myself and family have also enjoyed plenty of Albion matches thanks to the casino. If you keep in control and actually bother to learn what to look for etc you can make some good money, of course I lose from time to time but at this moment in time overall still in profit.

Have you found something to replace the habit with? That's normally what you should do, it's a mental barrier that way. Find a productive hobby, use a bit of money you save from gambling then turn that into a fund for a hobby.

If you keep in control and actually bother to learn what to look for etc you can make some good money, of course I lose from time to time but at this moment in time overall still in profit.

What on roulette? How much money do you lay down at a time?

I've learnt through other peoples mistakes btw and in my experience you only win money if you can afford to burn it.

You don’t have to jump off a high rise building to know it will kill you.

It is not possible to win on roulette if you play it a lot as the house holds the edge, 35 pay out on 37 numbers.

Skills at roulette and knowing what to look for? Absolute bollocks I'm afraid. The result of each spin is completely independent of every previous spin; hence it is 100% luck and the odds are, obviously, in the house's favour. The only game in the casino that a player can play the percentage game is Blackjack, and even that takes a very talented mind.

Yeah, I thought so, but Justice seems to think he has the skill to outwit the wheel.

I can understand there is a skill to increase your chances of winning at poker, or if you have inside info of who our new manager was going to be. But roulette is just an evening out at the casino for people who can’t play anything else.

Each FOTB makes about 50K a yr. 4 in a shop thats 200K and it is a total mugs game and why betting shops keep opening despite the rise of online gaming.

That said Vegas Gull has a point. There is so much competition out there that there are plenty of ways of making easy money for little risk if you know your way around betfair. Blue Square made a loss and threw in the towel William Hill have issued a profit warning and slumped down the FTSE100. The phrase you never see a poor bookie isn't always true.

As for the OP I wasn't always a shrewd punter. I was a crap one for ages. Cold turkey is one option and not one I'd not disuade you from if you can do it. Equally learning from your mistakes and becoming a successful punter is possible but never if you bet on everything and anything.
