I think it shows how a decent run of games can help a player get in tune with the team, patterns of play, and for their all round confidence.

I too wasn't sure in his first few appearances but unquestionably he's benefited from a run of matches and is proving a great addition.

Same with Van Hecke. A bit rough around the edges but is slowly looking like a really good player. A season of experience this year and we could have another real asset on our hands.

He shows incredible composure on the ball, and I don’t understand how the absolute UNIT he is manages to turn in tight circles so quickly and leave the oppo confused. Also not afraid to do the occasional old-fashioned row Z clearance when called for. Really beginning to rate him.

Igor looked a bit nervous when he first started, but is growing into the role. He seems to take great care over his passes.

I'm a big fan of Van Hecke, and have previously said he could be a future Brighton captain. He does look a bit gangly or ungainly, so people think he isn't always in full control of the ball, but this is misleading. I liked it when Baleba dropped back to form a back three with Igor and Van Hecke. Apart from the penalty, they looked pretty solid.

I don’t understand the Van Hecke love in, he is decent and generally put in some good performances - but if Webster gave away that penalty - or equally made that mistake in the second half where he very nearly gave it away to leave their man 1 on 1 we’d all be screaming for him to be shipped out

You should never write a player off for a mistake. Look at Gross last night he messed it up at left back resulting in Hinshelwood clearing the ball off the line, Straight up the other end and he puts it on the plate for Hinshelwood to score the winner.

Webster is 28 and is probably seen as the finished article. JPVH is only 23, and is seen as a prospect who is likely to improve. I think that's the difference really.

JPvH is great. Had a few ricks last night as he's learning his game. But he's going to be a rolls Royce of a defender and due to his age shows it a tiny bit inconsistently. I think he's excellent though and won absolutely every aerial dual last night.

Webster has dropped down the pecking order somewhat. I don't know what the stats say about them, but my perception is that Webster, although good defensively and strong in the air, gives the ball away more than our other central defenders. Perhaps RDZ is getting them to do more difficult one touch stuff in training and he sees the differences in them. I know he has had injuries though.

RDZ may even be brave and play with a back three on Saturday leaving Gross /Joel /Jack to play as wingbacks.
That way we can free up Baleba as well.

I get that but I’m just saying, people appear to gloss over mistakes made by JPVH and herald him as the second coming - but different yardstick is used for others

At half time in one game (I forget which), RDZ was asked what he said to the players in the dressing room. His answer was brief and concise. He said 'keep the ball'.

problem is Webster does it several times a game even when he is having a blinder. Thats why the flack comes.

Webster still can be picked and probably do a decent job alot of the time but you can't trust him. It looks like RDZ sees that also

I’d like it on the official NSC record, that I was completely WRONG about Igor, after witnessing his first performance at home to AEK.

That’s not to say he’s wasn’t awful that night - but based on that showing - clumsy, careless and painfully slow - I wrote him off.

I did so way too soon, as it turns out. He’s made constant improvement game on game, and I’d actually keep him in alongside Dunk (over JPVH) on Saturday.

He simply cannot have been fit in that first game and probably shouldn’t have been asked to play it.

Anyway. Me = wrong. Igor = decent.

I also didn't rate his debut, and expressed that view. Not sure I wrote him off.
Anyway, your and my responses are a worthwhile lesson in not forming judgments on a player from the evidence of one performance.

Good post, totally agree, although I didn't think he was that bad in his first game against AEK either. I'd have him in ahead of JPVH too. He got Van Hecke out of some sticky situations last night and on Sunday, he's a much calmer presence too.

Love it when he strides forward, he uses the ball so well. Always gets a great response from the crowd too!

Now THAT is a good stat. Webster is not that far behind it should be said, so no need for a pile in.

But Van Hecke. Wow. And Igor. Both are well ahead of Dunk.
