Now THAT is a good stat. Webster is not that far behind it should be said, so no need for a pile in.

But Van Hecke. Wow. And Igor. Both are well ahead of Dunk.
I'll guess, because it's easy to make a 3 yard square pas than it is to rake a massive diagonal out to Mitoma.

Of all the pointless stats in football, pass completion is maybe the most pointless

I wonder if he'll get dropped on Saturday when Dunk returns, or JPvH 'gets rested'
It's nice to have a genuine selection dilemma rather than every selection basically be a necessity.

Either JPVH or Igor would be very unlucky to be dropped on their performances. The most likely is a back 4 of ....

Veltman Van Hecke Dunk Igor

Which looks decent to me (Though Igor is far from a natural full back). It does mean probably bringing out either Gilmour or Hinsh which again is harsh, but I don't think it will be long until they are rotated back in

I get that but I’m just saying, people appear to gloss over mistakes made by JPVH and herald him as the second coming - but different yardstick is used for others 🤷🏻‍♂️
I think Van Hecke has been one of our strongest performers this season. But that decision to put an arm out to grab the Brentford striker was probably the most crass error of judgement i've seen from a Brighton centre back in a long time.

If he wants to keep his place, in the face of increasingly strong competition at centre back and then go on to play in the summer tournament for his country, he needs to show he's learned from this mistake

I don’t understand the Van Hecke love in, he is decent and generally put in some good performances - but if Webster gave away that penalty - or equally made that mistake in the second half where he very nearly gave it away to leave their man 1 on 1 we’d all be screaming for him to be shipped out
Not all of us.

He took one for the team imo. They were very likely to score

I’d like it on the official NSC record, that I was completely WRONG about Igor, after witnessing his first performance at home to AEK.

That’s not to say he’s wasn’t awful that night - but based on that showing - clumsy, careless and painfully slow - I wrote him off.

I did so way too soon, as it turns out. He’s made constant improvement game on game, and I’d actually keep him in alongside Dunk (over JPVH) on Saturday.

He simply cannot have been fit in that first game and probably shouldn’t have been asked to play it.

Anyway. Me = wrong. Igor = decent.
Think he is becoming an excellent player for us. Improving each game but that can be said with a few of our newer players. Does Dunk walk straight back on Saturday? Probably but Igor and JPVH do enough to keep places. I know the latter cost us a penalty last night but that was more down to him slipping.

I must say I've liked the look of Igor since first seeing him in the flesh in the August friendly at the Amex. The calmness on the ball and passing range stood out, plus he just has that cult hero aura about him.

My one concern was the ostensible lack of pace and mobility. That lingered until last weekend when we saw him keep up with Mudryk and come away with the ball. Now that he's fully fit and up to speed, he seems to get around the pitch very well indeed. I'm looking forward to seeing more of those Websteresque burst forwards with the ball too.

Webster is 28 and is probably seen as the finished article. JPVH is only 23, and is seen as a prospect who is likely to improve. I think that's the difference really.
That and JPVH didn’t cost over £20 million… Webster has been fortunate indeed to have played the majority of his games alongside Lewis, who makes other defenders look better… Dunk is the real deal, how we eventually replace a genuine legend… Man - its going to be tough :/

How long ago was it that a Brighton Centre Back got a two match ban for abusing the ref?

Dunk is playing on Saturday, I don't think there is any doubt about that.

Cover was arriving. Igor was coming across. Their chance was nowhere near as good as a penalty, which against us is a goal 99% of the time
Haven’t watched any replays, didn’t look like it from side on……will have a look at some point but JPVH has to make that decision in a split second…..

I think you are right he was taking one for the team, initial contact was made outside the box so I think JPVH wanted to make the pull back outside the box to give away a free kick, it was probably instinctive after the slip and JPVH hadn't realised how close to the box they were. Unfortunately the speed and momentum carried them both into the box so it becomes a penalty.

Worth chucking in that KdB's passing accuracy stats are way down the list. And that's because he doesn't play safe, and making ambitious passes is the norm for him. His assist and pre-assist stats are mightily impressive, on the other hand.

From my (limited) understanding, he would have been sent off if it wasn't out the box (no double jeopardy rule).

You should never write a player off for a mistake. Look at Gross last night he messed it up at left back resulting in Hinshelwood clearing the ball off the line, Straight up the other end and he puts it on the plate for Hinshelwood to score the winner.
I wasn’t concerned about any specific mistake or mistakes though. You’re absolutely right that you shouldn’t rush to judge based on isolated incidents.

The point was more that on that AEK showing, he didn’t look to have any of the attributes (pace, balance, composure) to possibly work out to be good enough.

But as I’ve said, he was surely just not fit that day, because he’s obviously very much better than he seemed.
