Eat a lot of low fat protein with fruit and vegetables and low GI carbs and you'll put on weight much more slowly than if you eat the same amount of Iceland Pizzas and fried MRM

such tact, taking from one extreme way over to the other. guess how people respond to "you're fat, dont eat any pizza"? they ignore you.

I don't think it's garbage. The protein and low GI carbs will fill you far more and keep you fuller longer than the earing the equivalent calories in pizzas and fried crap. This means you'll eat far fewer calories, which is the key to weight loss.

You can't break the first law of thermodynamics.

Sorry, I'm talking about portion size. OBVIOUSLY 1500 calories of crap and 1500 calories of organic vegetable and lightly grilled home reared chicken put exactly the same on you and need burning off. You need a massively bigger plate to accommodate the latter though

Odd, because I've lost two stone this year after changing my diet and taking up running because my doctor told me I was obese.

You must be young, dont hang your hat on intrusive health professionals, they are invariably proved wrong further upstream.

I said offer the information, even support but do not impose or impinge on personal legal preferences.

I am a young 41! You can only go off what experts are telling you at the time. If they're proved to be wrong later, then so be it, however you take a gamble if you live off the mantra of not listening to health professionals on the assumption they might be proved wrong later in history. "Bugger....they were right afterall" is not an epitaph I'd be looking for. I mean if you're talking about the odd individual report that eating too many oranges will kill you, or some other spurious claim then I agree with you, but obesity seems to be something professionals across the board and internationally are agreeing on as a problem.

Personal legal preferences are impacted by the state however you look at it. Alcohol and tobacco are taxed separately. Why not the foods that are causing as many if not more health risks?

Thats not quite true or at least needs a little context.

There are firstly the quasi science based around fad diets, most that deviate too far away from that original 'in versus out' might be considered this including the fuelling the metabolism, another magic bullet of the fad diets.

There seems to be some evidence that a protein high diet may keep you feeling full for longer and a few other along similar lines, but either way that can still be linked back to the original formula of calorie intake and expenditure.

I note that recently there is a revolution in trying to challenge this basic science, its an ongoing challenge because it is such lucrative market, just deliver one fad diet into the psycho of a country, continent or world means you have made your money and can go and get fat in luxury.

You're a bit late to the party. I've further explained what I meant in posts 82 and 83.

Fad diets are just that, fad diets and most people put straight back on what they've lost. I've lost two stone this year burning off more (I agree with you here) and changing a diet that was quite heavy in bad fats in to one that is much more balanced. On long run days I can eat a plate of chicken and rice the size of my head and follow it up with a fruit feast but I will have burned off about 2000 calories first.

The point about my sister in law that beorthalem has ignored to make his usual stab at smug, pedantic, nitpicking is that she did zero exercise, as does her daughter, and both eat mountains of really shit, cheap, fatty food. Hence they're enormous.

I never said dont listen, I have said listen, seek support if necessary and requested but do not impinge on another persons personal choices due to some arbitrary measure of what might be deemed reasonable or healthy at any one time.

Hold on, everything has consequences for our NHS and effects ultimate outcomes, we can target nearly every activity and see some level of impact.

I am of the opinion you live your life first and the NHS delivers appropriate care based on our cultural preferences, including alcohol, nutrition, exercise and activities and not work backwards from the NHS effecting our lifestyle choices just to save money or increase life expectancy.

I just think it delivers a better psychological position that might deliver happier outcomes, which in turn would save the NHS trillions !!!

Have we got a committee to equate the inevitable savings of just living reasonably, sometimes not and being less personally judgemental based on someone's weight, no, well that would be because we already know.

I haven't read the whole thread but I'd argue there are two main reasons for fat kids -

1. Not eating proper, home-cooked meals.
2. Drinking calories, coke etc, and tragically in recent years, energy drinks.

Parents are entirely to blame for the first problem, which typically leads to the second.

I haven't read the whole thread but I'd argue there are two main reasons for fat kids -

1. Not eating proper, home-cooked meals.
2. Drinking calories, coke etc, and tragically in recent years, energy drinks.

Parents are entirely to blame for the first problem, which typically leads to the second.

I was a fat kid who grew into a skinny adult, can you explain that? This was back in the day before processed ready meals & I never shovelled sweets , we could not afford & I never liked fizzy Coke etc . It fell off me in my teens, hormones, I guess.

I object to anyone saying my parents were "bad"

I do generalise but those are my two primary reasons. Of course individual cases have other dependent variables, like genes, hormones etc but the broad trend in overweight kids cannot be explained this way; it is mostly a product of social factors.

But my point is, so what.

Why should you worry about someone being fat, I dont.

Morbidly obese is something that is likely to have some intervention anyway, but ultimately if they do not have any health problems who are we to look into the future based purely on their BMI and guess a likely illness.

Just as I wouldnt wish to intrude in your family history, personal choices or lifestyle, where would you like this intrusion to start or end, just weight, why not smoking, drinking, sexual preferences, driving habits or exercise regime ??

funny, because that's exactly the point i was highlighting/agreeing, only noting the source of their mountains of food were not the main problem, as part of the discussion. clearly you have some personal grudge.
