Does make you realise that modern music culture is so much about solo artists these days. Has there ever been an era in popular music (like 1960 onwards let’s say) where major act ‘bands’ are so rare - apart from the legacy acts, that is?
Further, the big hit songs by these solo artists have an army of writers these days. That Apt. song has 11 co-writers, although a couple are from the Tony Basil Mickey song they lifted bits from.

It's a good question. Some of the best headline sets are the most unexpected. After all the negativity around Jay Z, he absolutely owned Glastonbury with his set. I have never found the opening film which showed looped Noel Gallagher's 'hip hop at Glastonbury, no way'..it's not in the BBC ocverage...presumably due to all the film snippits it used, But, as the fim rolled he came out dressed as Liam Gallagher and opened with Wonderwall and then went straight into 99. Pure entertainment, and his point was made. The set was tailored towards the festival and was a lot more rock than usual, I heard the Prodigy and ACDC and other samples he used were not used on the rest of his tour. His accapela about 'your Queen having more bling than me' was genius. I am not a fan of his but this gig is in my top 10.

So to answer your question....I have no idea

Here's the opening.

Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds

Jack White

The Cure
Nick cave did one set where he went out into the audience and there was this young lady sat on the shoulders of a guy. He worked his way over to her and sang directly to her.

it was a sublime piece of theatre that was on iPlayer for a while then it was removed as they only keep the Glastonbury sets for a short time.

I assume this is a fantasy original line-up type of deal, ignoring the fact they would probably be shit in an open air festival type environment?

In which case my top 3 would be :

  • Joy Division
  • Birthday Party
  • Clash

Or s it a current line up of bands that I think would be worth watching at Glastonbury
If so then

  • The Cure
  • Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds
  • Black Rebel Motorcycle Club

Falmer, soon...
I don't think there are really that many headline acts who have the longevity to cross decades and genres
Coldplay are rightfully the most likely.

Personally, I'd quite to see the Chemical brothers - obviously with guests. Noel Gallagher, Tim Burgess, Beth Orton, Wayne Coyne etc.
or Daft Punk with guests.

both could be incredible

I was lucky enough to catch them in London in the Covid years (and I know they've since done a tent at Glastonbury now), but there is no act I'd rather see headliining the Pyramid Stage than Rick Astley and The Blossoms performing The Smiths.

I actually think the future of Glastonbury is pulling together acts for unique performances (or at least guests combos).

It's lame when headliners just treat it as another night of their tour.
