[Albion] If we stay which CBs will be with us next season?

Much as I agree with the principles of what you say, I'm afraid we have, and it was Webster, but I'm struggling to remember which game

Chelsea got a Penalty at the bridge from it led to a goal
Wolves goal v us at AMEX could be classed as one

But I thought Webster was ensuring game on game, that the odds of further 'fannying around cock-ups' remained constant ???

For sure. Though The Law Of Sod dictates that fannying around at the back will bite us in the bum (as it were) bigtime at some point when we least need it in the remaining games. It's all downside with that particular gormless tactic, just an accident waiting to happen. Other teams 'work us out' in about five minutes flat. Five minute job

I think White would benefit from another season at Leeds. He would probably get more game time there than with us.
Balogun is obviously gone and Dunk would go if a big enough fee came in from Chelsea.
Still leaves us with plenty of options.Wouldn’t want to lose both Dunk and Duffy. That’s a step too far for me.

Who knows.

To be honest I can’t actually make a call on Burn as a CB as seen little of him actually playing there.

Centre back, left wing back, l don't care, l want him to remain at the club in whatever position the manager wishes to play him. Her has been a revelation for me.

Of the others l assume all will stay, with the exception of Balogun, and possibly Duffy if he wishes to move on, although l hope very much that he doesn't.

Oh you are going to suffer if Potter stays.

Here is an example of how "Potterball" with a bit of more Potter-adapted squad is played in the own six yard box:

The "fannying around at the back" is here to stay and every manager will do it in a year or two, the data revolution and the goal kick rule change is going to make the long kick more or less extinct except for some niche teams.

And yes, its both incredible and great that we havent conceded like that yet and it will indeed happen. Its still preferable to the amount of goals you let in from having your goalkeeper give away possession 60% of the times with long kicks.

Gave a penalty away at Chelsea though.

Short goal-kick encourages a press, which as Watford successfully showed vs Liverpool can be counteracted by playing longer, so in fact longer passing may stay for a while yet.

Webster will hopefully improve defensively next year, but hopefully White will start over him.

Yeah, the long ball will still have its place every now and then - just like the short corner. While playing out from the back is optimal, its even better if you have alternatives.

Looking forward to how the whole "playing short/pressure teams that play short" chess will play out over the next couple of years. Its early yet and a lot of optimisation will be done.

Really hard to predict, obviously.

I think Duffy is leaving, perhaps to a freshly promoted team or to one of the Glasgow teams. Dunk could leave to be a homegrown backup at i.e. City, but I think he stays unless relegated. Webster is probably staying no matter what. Balogun leaves of course. Dan Burn probably wont be the no 1 left back after another transfer window, could see him playing a lot more CB next year. Clarke... another loan seems likely, he's been pretty good recently. Ben White... I think we want him to stay but that he wants to join Leeds if they go up, and as long as Potter is in charge only players that want to play for Brighton will be part of the squad.

My guess

If PL: Dunk, Webster, Burn, new signing + possibly Clarke, Östigård or White

If Championship: Webster, Clarke, Östigård, Roberts. Maybe Duffy.

idk why anyone would want to play burn at centre back & get a new left back.
he's been quality in this position, our right backs are far worse, montoya and schelotto are useless

i hope duffy goes because i love him too much to see him benched each week
i'd like to see how white does intsead of webby next to dunk next year.

I agree both Burn & Bernardo are better than Montoya/Schelotto and agree that Burn has been great, but in the long run I think the way to go is to find someone who contributes a bit more in attack.

Yes - it will be interesting. The thing that concerns me, is that recently ‘traps’ are being set for us, and Propper particularly often plays a blind pass to either full-back without knowing which side the pressure is coming from.

Stockade was a lot better at passing than Ryan, and that may be another area we need to improve in.

Bernado is streets ahead of Burn in every aspect of play other than heading IMO.

However, Burn in a steady and doing little wrong.

If we do get relegated then we have plenty of young decent CB's who will be waiting to play. I think Balogun & Duffy may look to move on no matter what division we are in

It depends how deploy our centre backs. I’d like to see us revert to the back 3 system we played at the beginning of the season with, assuming we stay in the PL, a back three of White - Dunk - Webster, with Burn as back up. I know he’s been deployed as a left full back, but it’s not his natural position and I’d much rather see Bernardo there. Duffy, sadly, and Balogun to be moved on with Clarke out on another loan to another Championship club. Duffy deserves more than to be a benchwarmer for us and I’m yet to be convinced by him in this ‘Potterball’ system.

Our problems are with taking big chances.

Perhaps we should be looking to make some bucks to invest in the £30m rated Muriqi and help balance a player+£20m swap with relegated ‘Muff for Brooks with March going the other way?

Out:

Duffy: Our best defender at ‘defending’ but not so great at Potterball. He deserves to be starting every match for percentage teams like Newcastle, Palace or Burnley. Let’s take the £20m and run.

Dunk: Off to Chelsea for around £40m. Good for him and his England chances. Bad for us but we’ve got the best young centre back in the Country to replace him and an overflowing wallet to help find forward players who can convert chances.

Balogun: The Championship seems to be where he is heading.

In:

Leo Skiri Østigård: Back from rave reviews in Germany where he enjoys playing in the centre of a back three.

Ben White: The best centre back prospect in the Country. Liverpool and Man City will have to wait. He needs to prove himself with us first as Dunk’s replacement. Born to play Potterball.

Matt Clarke: Was scouted by Potter for Potterball. Will need a season to settle in the Premier League but hopefully he’ll not make too many errors.

Remains:

BDB: Although mostly deployed at left back, this giant can play in a back three with ease or even as a centre back in a four. Very good at Potterball.

Webster: His second Premier League season should be a step up with lesson learned and Potterball mastered.
