I said to a Labour mate of mine i will give them five years before they start fu*king the country up and i reckon i was pretty close.

Mind you i am sure he won't see it that way.

People like Benn, Skinner, Corbyn. I left when we bombed Serbia I think. Still believe the only way we'll get anything like a socialist Govt is via democracy. You left after clause 4 went I take it?

I was 8 when clause 4 went!

Never been a member but have a background in it from my family.

Both of my parents were members but left after 1992 I think..

My mum was actually going to be the Brighton Pavilion candidate for Labour in 1987 but she had to pull out because of my impending birth..lol.

I'm still going :)

Remember, we do have tiny victories - such as the readmittance of Ken Livingstone after his expulsion.

Who is she? I Might know her. Ian Morley (big Albion fan and very involved in bring home the Albion campaign) is son of long time GC member and Labour councillor Chris Morley.

I can remember Dave Hill fighting the seat back in 1987 - in those days before the electoral boundary changes, we had little hope in Pavilion against Julian Amery, all the focus was on winning Kemptown, but would be interested to know who your mum is too.

didn't Mr Amery not actually live here?

Then we got Derek "the homophobe" Spencer.

she was a councillor in the mid 80s for the regency ward.

Can remember your mum's name but not her face alas, but I do remember Regency was one of the most vibrant Labour wards with a huge membership, which all melted away with the drift rightwards :( One of her co-councillors was Andy Winter, who was a tremendous stalwart of the left at the time, his partner Jeane Calder now writes those very earnest but well-argued opinion pieces in the Argus.

Did you know Andy then?

I've met him twice talking about Brighton Homeless Trust who he now works for, and for whom I raised money for this xmas.

He seemed a really inspirational and decent guy, the sort of person that I would want in MY labour party.

LI, I dare not ask you about Bassam then?:lolol:

It's many years since I've spoke to Andy and Jeane, but they were terrific people, the kind of people sadly that Kinnock and Blair drove out.

Steve Bassam, I don't actually mind, he was civil to those on the left he disagreed with, he was with me at any rate but perhaps he didn't see me as much of a threat :lolol:

And of course you can only admire the results for the Albion of the kind of lobbying Bassam's done for us in government circles in recent times. Selling out does have its advantages

Absolutely agree about Andy and Jean. She now runs the womans refuge and campaigns tirelessy against domestic violence. I was in 7 Dials Ward untill it got suspended, people like Richard and Linda Austin, Ruchard Stanton, again a thriving local ward shut down in the early 90's anti Militant purge. The joke was that 7 dials was about as un'Militant' as anywhere. Was it 5 Councillors who got thrown out of the party for not paying the Poll Tax?

Ah, some old Labour hands here. I left in the mid-80s when the anti-Militant purges first started - I was never a member in Brighton though.

It always seemed like second nature to vote Labour; it still seems hard even now not to do it. But I can't bring myself to vote for a Tory party, even if these Tories wear red rosettes.

Andy was one of them I think.

Wasn't it Bassam's big plan?

I was in Hanover, another strong left ward with no Militant. I saw Richard Stanton not so long ago in Borough Market, still living in Brighton but inevitably now part of Ken's huge workforce of 1980s/1990s lefties :clap2: :clap2: :clap2: :clap2: :clap2: :clap2:
