I thought this particular list might make a few think, owing to the disgusting circumstances.

UKIP will win a huge amount of votes at the European elections, showing how dissatisfied the UK as a whole is with the EU. The majority of these voters will be Tories, but there will be some labour voters.

The Tories will then move further to the right, repeat their promise of an in/out referendum if they win the general election. These disaffected Tories will then return to voting Tory at the GE, as will a certain number of labour voters who themselves want a referendum. Meanwhile Milliband sits on his hands.

Tories then win election, there is a referendum, in which the UK votes to stay in on the understanding that is renegotiation of certain treaties.

Correct. It's wrong, in my opinion, to label such types as racist. I'm sure many are but my default label is little Englander.

It is ironic that you use the moniker "little Englander" to identify those you disagree with in the debates about the EU. As you probably know it was first used in political debates in the late 1800s by those in power who were overwhelmingly pro British empire (i.e. imperialists) to demean the arguments of those who considered that adventures (particularly military) by the Government around the world were not in the interests of the British people back home.

There were different motives for why some little Englanders felt that Britain should not be involved in (say) the Boer war but it would be difficult to deny that they were not largely progressive minded, especially given the context of the times.

So 100 plus years later and the term is back with a bang and is still being used by those in power to demean the arguments of those who consider that as a sovereign nation those in power should concentrate on the interests of ordinary British people first.

The motives of the arguments used by those imperialists in the 1800s can be seen in exactly the same arguments as those who dogmatically support the EU. We will benefit from the expansion of trade they say, we will be richer they say, we will develop demand to drive growth in the economy they say.

Those in power say it today because just like 100 years ago the dynamic is largely the same; the powerful are acting in their own interests and of the people that benefitted financially from the Empire namely merchants, industrialists and monetarists. The British working class didn't get any dividend from the wealth of the Empire instead they worked 7 days a week in appalling conditions and lived in squalor. Now they have zero hour contracts, job insecurity and the minimum wage, plus ca change.

The use of the term "far right" is another way the imperialists demean the argument of little Englanders too, and may explain why these people do not get much traction by politicians and the media................
